I have a 1950 Farmall H that is in original condition, more or less. Question : The rotary light switch has 4 positions but the bottom 2 both seem to be "OFF". 3rd position is all lights "On" dim. 4th position is all lights "On" bright. Is this correct?

Gentlemen,
Thank ya'll so much for your answers. That answered my question completely. I never knew about the High and Low charge positions on the light switch. Am always tickled to learn something new! Again I appreciate the trouble you went to in answer to my question.

Dawg, Right after you start the tractor if it has a working ammeter take note to see if she charges maybe only a few amps + with that switch in the first L (Low Charge) position and several more amps charge if in the second H (High Charge) position?? If so sounds like its wired n working as Jim noted with a Cutout Relay equipped generator, but if it makes no difference whatsoever in the rate of charging (L or H) I agree with Jim you may have a more modern full fledged 3 or 4 terminal Voltage Regulator that didnt use the 4 position light switch. It can still work fine to control the lights however.

Expanding a bit on what Jim comments below, if your tractor now has a voltage regulator the L and H switch positions are now simply two alternate "off" positions for the lights.

The light switch may be from an older H. The positions of the switch you have are (from full counterclockwise) L H D B. The L and H were to adjust the charge rate of the generator. They were used on Hs that had a cutout relay only on the generator. It was the operator's job to adjust the charge rate. Your tractor may have a full operating voltage regulator (which does not use the switch at all. I hope this helps. JimN
