Well I am getting close to pulling the engine on my 1950 H, finally got the front end removed with only 2 broken bolts.

How much of the drive/clutch assembly to I need to remove before the engine can come out?

Do I follow the instruction in the service manual for removing the clutch and that should be all I need to do?

Randy

If you find a nut (5/8 or 3/4 inch) that will screw on the threaded end of the dowel pins and tighten it up I think you can pull the dowels out. Mine were not threaded into the metal plate but fit tight to align everything. Dave

Dave you hit it on the nose. That's what I ended up doing and she came loose.
I would have never seen how the dowel pins were installed until the engine was pulled away about a 1/4 inch and saw that the threads were not going to go through the plate like I thought they were ; )

Well then something is hanging up, I have removed all the bolts, including the one behind the starter opening. I have a 1/32 gap between the engine and bell housing, but it will go no further, Thats why I thought the clutch had to be removed. do I dare pry on it?

If the dowels are not what is keeping the engine from moving more, the other thing that can be causing the problem is the clutch shaft seized in the pilot bearing and/or clutch disk. If that is the cause you may have to disconnect the driveshaft joint and release carrier bracket and take the shaft out with the engine. Once out of the clutch housing you will be able to separate the clutch from the flywheel to get at the pilot bearing.

If it moved at all, nothing is holding it.

You're just not pulling perfectly straight, and the clutch disk is binding on the input shaft. Pry, but GENTLY, and preferably from both sides at the same time.

There a couple of alignment dowels, one on each side, and there is most likely a lot of rust and other crud built up around these dowels. The dowls are screwed into the clutch housing, and then slip through matching holes in the plate that is bolted to the engine block. If you already have a gap between that plate and the housing, you can use a pry bar, but pry a little on one side, and then on the other side, and if possible you might need to pry both sides at the same time.

Thanks Rusty, yeah those dowels that have threads did seem to be full of crud, I will clean them up and give em a shot of PB Blaster.

The engine will come out with the flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate still attached. The "driveshaft" will stay with the tractor, and should just slip out of the clutch disc.

You don't need to remove ANY of the clutch or drive. Just pick up the engine and carefully slide it forward and off of the transmission input shaft. The clutch and pressure plate will come with the engine and flywheel.

You can remove the input shaft, and clutch/pressure plate assemblies, but it's a lot more work. It's much easier to work on the clutch with the engine out.
