Leaky axle...why does oil come out of the end?

One rear axle on my 460 U leaks hyd oil at a fast drip. It appears to come out from behind a large washer and bolt. I do not understand how the oil would be able to pass here. The whole hub gets oil soaked rather quickly after getting it warmed up good. Can someone enlighten me on how this hub retainer would have to be sealed to stop this leak? the axle seal itself is dry all around the opposite side of the hub. I will try a picture posting here. I have one in the parts & pieces area.

Thanks!

That hub looks similar to the one on my 350U. You may need to take the hub off and replace the o ring. It should be between the end of the hub and outboard axle bearing. The o ring prevents oil from leaking around the splines of the axle shaft and hub.

You nailed it! Went to the dealer this AM and stumped the young guy at the parts counter. He thoughtfully directed me to the older gentleman (service Manager) who knew exactly what was up. Now I have tha task of replacing it. Do I have to drain the Hy Tran?

No, I dont think so, I believe the oil will return below this level when sitting on level ground. Since there is oil atound the splines now, the hub should come off without too much trouble. One of mine was rusted on and it was a bear to get off. Good luck.

There is a seal inside, it fits on the axle, there may be two, one on each end. If there is you have to pull the axle (detach from inside the differential housing). Very common problem.
