years ago dealer told me to always use straight 30W diesel oil in 1466 which does our tillage work- in everything else we use 15W-40- would it be Ok to switch 1466 to 15W-40 or should I stick with 30W?

We bought two new IH tractors in 1980 and both said to use only SAE 30 in them, but I have been running Shell Rotella 15W40 for several years and no problems yet. In 94 I bought a new Ford 7610 and the book on it called for 15W40 in the summer and SAE 30 in the winter.

The old service manager at the CIH dealership which was originally an IH dealer, says that using a 15W40 multigrade will cause excessive camshaft lobe/follower wear. Could be true, but I use 15W40 in all my IH engine stuff and there are more than a few. If he is correct and this proves to be a problem then they will be replaced with something which can use the updated, easier starting lubricants.

You will have no problem running 15w40. I even run it in my 560. Check out Deere, they don't even offer straight oils for diesels anymore, 15w40 and 5w30 (for cold weather) is all they sell.

KB: Even most of the mainline oil companies, around here at least don't even stock 10, 20 and 30 anymore.

I used 15W-40 in my SA, 130, 300, 560D, 656D 1066. Deere, Case, Perkins, Chevy trucks, OLDS and Buicks cars, even my 4 cycle push lawn mower my IH dealer gave me when I paid him for the 1066 in 1975. I used that lawn mower until last year when I sent it to the bone yard. The wheels, mower deck, blade and push handle all had been replaced, but the Tecumseh engine was original.

I'm using it in a Toyota Camery, Buick LeSabre, SA, 130 and 140 currently. The only one I ever add oil to between changes is 130, and it is leaking around crank seal.

GRB: I don't know where these ideas come from re multi grade oil. I never had a 1466, but I had a 1066 go 15,000 hours on 15W-40, with a rebuild at 9,800 hours due to cavitation. I also had a 466 go well over 10,000 hours to first rebuild on 15W-40. If it was wrong, I can fault it.
