Super C Main Bearing Question

I am rebuilding a Super C and I noticed the previous rebuilder has the main bearing caps facing various directions, any big deal? The caps have a 76 on one side of the crown of the cap and a raised cast spot on the other. I small IH is off-centered on the crown of the cap. I thought maybe the numbers should face the cam like the rods or does it matter if it is getting all new bearings? BTW, the previous guy also had the timing gear off by one tooth but they must have timed it OK because it ran decent.

The main bearing numbers are stamped into the machined surface of the block, pretty sure on the camshaft side. They can be hard to find, may have to use a scraper to uncover them. When fitting the caps the numbers should face each other. Sid.

you will have a lock on both halves of the bearing insert [a small piece of the bearing bent out] to keep it from spinning in the cap, the locks on the top and bottom half should be on the same side.

Do not assume that the main bearing tabs match together on IH engines. Many engines have them 180 degrees from each other.
