Well ya could have the machine shop do it whiel they are doing the valves of ya could have a machine shop make up a driver and just beat them out . when i would remove and install guides i used the press with the proper tooling.

The tool or tools that we had were made from tool steel with a tip that went into the guide and was just a wisker smaller then the hole in the guide and had a larger shaft for driving on or pushing on , where the flage meet the top or bottom of the guide it was machined back so it would not fold the metal around the hole to cause the hole to get tight on the valve stem also had the reams to clean them up . At one time my buddy and i had everything to do heads with , had the head surface grinder tooling to install guide in heads that had the guide cast into them tooling to install seat had it all . It was all in good shape but old and slow . Had a nother buddy that had and engine machine shop with the latest and greatest state of the art stuff he could do the job faster then we could for less . like boring and engine with his big stationary boring bar he could bore and finish hone and engine in the time it took me to do three holes and with him doing them i did not had to fight that 250lb. portable bar over each hole . Went back to just twisten wrenches as my time was better spent .

the valve seats are done already. I did not think I was going to get new guides but they came in my overhaul kit. do you pound them into the combustion chamber or up towards the rocker shaft. I tried pounding on one going down and all it did was mush the end of it

Well if ya are going to put in new guide then the seat ARE NOT DONE as the new guides will and you can take this to the bank will not seal wright as they will be off.

so let me get this straight when I put in the new guides I will have to have the new seats recut by a machine shop. that way everything will run true and hopefully not leak.

Correct. Were your old guides worn? Or are you just replacing them because they came with the kit? In my experence the guides often are in good shape, its the valves that need replacing on an H. Also those new guides will most likelly need to be reamed so the valves fit correctally. So to sum it up, head and valve work is best left to a good machine shop unless you have the proper equipment and knowlage to do the job.

I think your own machine shop will tell what the
