I have a 1951 super A with way too much play in steering ( 3/4 turn of steering wheel).
Just got IT book looks fairly simple. Anyone had any experience with this? Thanks, Curtis

So maybe just a new key?
Thanks, Curtis

Curtis: Some require keyway repair and cutting larger keyways. My most successful one to date, the keyway in shaft was V shape. I ground a larger key to fit shaft, welded it in there, then ground it so gear was a press fit. Did much the same with key for steering arm. That was over 20 years ago, and of my 3 tractors it has the tightest steering.

Curtis: Just about everyone that ever owned a Super A, experienced what you are going through. The few that didn't bought them new and have long since passed away. The rest that never had a problem are either liars or just bought a SA to look at.

90% of the time the problem is vertical shaft within the steering box. Newer ones have woodruff keys on gear and steering arm while the older ones have square tapered shaft for steering arm. I have seen woodruff keys bad enough to give a full 360 degree turn at steering wheel.

The other 10% have bearings gone in steering wheel shaft. If there is no end play on that shaft those bearings are fine.
