Farmall MD questions!

If any one can help please i would be very greatful. I am going to buy a MD on sunday... The guy im buying it from says that it wont start. He ran it the day before. He told me it died on him and then would not start back up. what i dont know if it died when he was running on diesel or on gas. but if it did die on diesel and lets say the diesel pump quit shouldnt it still start on gas? It dooes have a magneto for the gas to fire on. I think if it is not getting spark i will check the mag and wires. My question is just because it wont start on gas does that mean it wont run on diesel eather? i know you are supposed to warm them up on gas then switch. but can a guy pull start it right off of diesel. it is supposed to be 80 out on sunday when i go get it. If I pulled it around for a while with it on the gas side of the motor with the gas valve off at the tank I was thinking that i could warm the engine up that way enough to make the diesel fire. does this sound like somthing that would work? I had a guy tell me that he had pulled a minneapolis moline that was supposed to warm up like the md and he said it took a while but it did start. Any suggestions would be a big help as I would like to get it running so i can load on my gooseneck trailer without tring to push or pull it on. Also... am i right that when you wanna stop the md you just idle it down till it kills as there is no "kill" switch. or is there a kill switch? i do not know alot about the MD. I just know they dint make nearly as many as the reguar M. Thanks for any info!

Take that thing home and get the gas components to working like it is suppose to. It is the same as any gas tractor, spark+gas+air = running. It has to be changed back to gas in the shut down process to avoid head damage. They are not near as complicated as some folks think. I knew nothing about one and bought a 450 not running, that had sit in a barn for 14 years, brought it home cleaned tanks and carb, checked out distributor made sure I had spark. After all my inspections and cleaning of fuel lines and so on it would not start on gas, so I pulled it 10 feet and it fired right up. Then I completed the bleeding process and threw the lever and it changed right over and ran great. Since then it has started with the starter every time just like it is suppose to do.

I am by no means an expert on the MD or any other piece of equipment, but have had a little experience with one (it's still there on the farm but hasn't run in many years like all of the other tractors there). Don't pull or try to operate it on the gas side. It should/will start on the diesel side...this is how we started and ran it for the time that it was used. When my father stopped using it was because there wasn't anyone around to help him start it. There is a third valve in the cylinder head for each cylinder that is for compression release in order to run it on the gas side. This valve can/will be bent or ruined when trying to operate it on gasoline if the tractor is in operation/moving. This (according to the people that I consulted with when trying to get it to run right) was one of the reasons that there were as many problems with the MD. It's a great tractor to run with plenty of power and VERY fuel efficient, but takes a manual/books (was never able to get a hold of one other than the I&T Manuals that were very vague about it) and experienced assistance and patience in order to learn and run it correctly. The diesel injector pump looks a lot different than anything that I've ever seen. You may want to check / change the oil in the injector pump. Something you may want to try if/when you try pull starting it is to crack the lines at the injectors open and make sure that there fuel getting there. Leave them slightly loosened (engine should/will still start) until you get it runnig and then tighten them down. This way you should be able to ensure you get all of the air out of the system. You can tell if it's getting fuel because there will be kind of a white vapor coming out of the exhaust and that's when you will usually get it started shortly afterwords. If the injector pump is going bad it will most likely lose it's prime and be cavitated then will get air in the system and it will run like crap and usually just idle at best. If this is the case while trying to load it up there is a petcock valve on the injector pump that you can "bleed" the system with by cracking it open. If having to do so you most likely will be surprised on how much air will come out of it. We usually had to let it sit there idling and stuttering until it came back up. Most likely the govenor on it will not be good either. Just my tad bit worths of experience with one for all that it's worth to your tasking. Good Luck with it, I'm sure that if you have the patience and a few dollars that you will have an enjoyable experience with this tractor. My email is open and I am really interested in the outcome you have with this tractor and would like to hear how things work out with it. I still have over two years in the military left and little time or a place to have something like this to tinker with, but still would like to and hope to get the tractor and try to get it to running correctly some day. Hopefully it won't be stuck or stuck to bad by the time that day comes. Jim

i have a 400D and i had to pull start it to get it running for the first couple of months since it had sat for 20+ years. im not sure about how the MD is set up but on the 400 its better to change it back over to gas before you shut it down. its (in my experience) easier to get it started on gas becase it seems to clean the sparkplugs. i then just shut off the key. the manual says to shut off the gas at the tank and let it run itself dry to kill it.

Get a break on the price. Make sure it is not stuck, and has oil pressure and coolant is not in the oil. Don't over do the getting it started, it raises the price. JimN

I have already lock in on a price. the guy is just to busy to monkey with it. he ran it last on april 17 2007 so it is not stuck. i will check all the usual things that you look for when buying a old tractor, I just wanna get her going so it is easyer to load. The guy used it to bail hay. it has a nice 9 speed and the battery is under the seat. It is not a super md. i know alot of farmall guys think they did not put one of the batterys under the seat. but it was an option as if you dint want it next to the seat. the guy just tells me he cant start it. I was just wondering if it wont start on gas if you could get her going on diesel. it should run on one of the fuels, very unlikly the magneto on the gas side went out and then the diesel not to work at the same time is just not likley. I might tell the guy that i dont want it any more and he might come down in price. But with the 9 speed and power steering I dont wanna chance losing the tractor. It also has a nice wide loader on it that im gonna put on a diffrent tractor as the md with the 9 speed will come in handy when i go to pull wagons and chopper boxes. I just need to get it home first!

Pulling it will work if it will run on Diesel. It might run on Gas, but will not have power or governor control. remember the price was "locked when it ran" if he has no time, he should nock off 105$ Do it, JimN

I am not positive but I think that your best bet is to try cranking the motor over and see if there is pressure on the gauge on the injection pump. If there is pressure there it should fire up on diesel if you pull it long enough and if there is compression in the motor. If it just died on diesel maybe the supply pump on the injection pump broke and needs to be rebuilt. I had that happen last fall to mine. It should run on gas if you have spark, compression, and air. The motors are not as complex as one would think just take your time and it may be better to pull it on the trailer than to risk breaking more items as parts can get really expensive in a quick hurry.
