A while back I was reading with interest the Discussion about carpenter bees, and the different ways people kill them. and some years back my wife had made a bee bat out of a piece of 1x4 and cut a handleout of one end. But carpenter bees are only the start of our problem. About a week ago one of GA large red headed wood pickers moved in . He is feasting on the nest of the carpenter bees and tearing up our rafters to get at them. It took me a couple of days to figure out what he was doing, and now we have a mess. you can be sure we will be more aggressive with the bees from now on.

I had a big woodpecker in back of me until they filled it with houses just like the one in this picture known as the Pileated woodpecker. One of my retired co-worker's has a pair of these that stay in wooded area near his house. They raise a chick every year. He takes pictures of them all the time. Hal
PS: They can sure scream too.

I just spray the places the bees bore with a good strrong soloution of insecticide. It soaks in and kills them for a few months when they gnaw on the wood. Spring and mid summer do it for me.

Also they will not bore in well painted wood.
At least the ones here do not.

Good with the bad. The torn up material may have been so structurally compromized that it needs to be replaced or reinforced. Buildings have been destroyed by Bees (I had one (rented) in east central Ohio). Fumigation may do it, along with plugging the holes they use for entry. I used a badminton racket to whack about 60 of them on one day. the next day there were 4 left Whack again. JimN
