Farmall C Magneto Timing Problem

I am trying to time my neighbors C that has an H-4 Magneto. I cannot get it to trip at TDC. Even with the magneto rotated as far as possible away from the block the impulse trip occurs when the mark on the flywheel is almost 1.5 inches past the mark on the housing...Rotating the mag back towards the block moves the flywheel mark almost out of site (to the right as you are looking forward).

The slots on the drive flange are parallel to the ground at TDC so I do not think the drive gears is out of alignment. I looked through some of the archives but am still unsure of what the problem might be.

Sorry to say I am a Case guy (DC & VAC both with distributors) so please be patient with me...
Thank you

I have looked through the archiv es but didn't see

Paul,
Remove the mag, crank #1 to TDC, turn mag to #1, reinsert mag, turn away from block until it trips.
That's the basics, hope it helps,

Paul

That seems to be the problem...I get the engine to TDC and set the mag to #1 then install it. When I rotate the mag out it won't trip. If I remove the mounting bolts so I can rotate the mag out even further it will finally trip ..but the mounting holes are then not usable.
