I have a Farmall B and an H. I would like to convert them from a 6 to 12 volt with an alternator.
presently they are both positive ground. Can I change them to negative ground 12 volt without damaging the starter? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Absolutely!

Series-wound starters - used on ALL on all old tractors - are polarity insensitive by their design. They spin the same direction grounded either polarity.

Yo Bob, I enjoy when we get this question n some jump out of the woodwork n shout n scream n holler n rant n rave the starter will turn the opposite direction if the polarity were reversed. No takers this time however. I left you an open to describe your smaller cable theory but you took a pass, geeeee

Take care Bob

Ol John T and all

Yes, The starter will still function and turn the same direction (i.e. no damage) regardless of polarity. As far as cranking, a 6 volt starter can still work at 12 volts and will spin a lot faster without harm unless one were to let it crank for an extended period which might possibly overheat it. HOWEVER the extra kick in torque can be a tad tough on starter drives (Bendix) and or flywheel teeth but Ive used them and not experienced problems running 6 volt starters at 12 volts. Our friend Bob M just recently suggested the use of smaller battery cables might help reduce potential starter damage when using 12 volts on 6 volt starters.

Of course, there are other ignition concerns and ammeter and coil wiring issues dependign on if youre switching voltages or polarities or both and we can help with as needed.
