Engine Building Again

In My research I have come up with a combination of a Non-Farmall Piston and a Non-Farmall connecting rod that will fir nicely on a stroked crankshaft and take the engine out to almost 380cid and with a compression ratio of 11-1 with a 450 head. The qustion I need to know is about balancing. The piston and connecting rod that I want to use will weigh differntly than the Farmall M piston and connecting rod. Will this matter as long as they weigh the same? What does balnacing an engine really entail. I was always told that a 450 crankshaft was balanced and that is why they run smoother than a 400. Thanks for your help.

Since your worken on a old m that does not have any counter balances built into the crank ya may have a problem as you will more then likely HAVE to add weight and that will take some doing of machining the crank and maken up weights to be mounted to it then drillen them to get it wright . And i am guessen that you want to go play tractor pullen . The down side to this is you still will not have enough when ya come aganist a MM with a slightly built 4 cylinder let lone a realy built one . As they can get over 600 cubes out of a MM U with not any problem and they will live BTDT. And the nice thing about them is that ya can build one of them for the low end of nothing with junk parts .Even though i bleed red i even saw the light on that one . As with buying the tractor building the motor weight brackets buying the tires and wheels and fiberglass oil pan and transmission cover we only had a littel under 3400 bucks in the whole thing. With what you want to do is fine but you will get more in machine work then ya think. But each to his owen.

I have a 360 cu. M untill you go over 6500lbs you can run with a MM. Granted it will cost more with a red one, but you can run 4500 to 6500 lbs and run with the best.

Now i don't know about that as the one we put togther had 609 CU. In. and even the one guy with the 22000 dollar massey harris was 75 feet behind and that just made him so mad as we had no real speed limit and in the 4500 it was road gear at 20% over rpm and sometimes ya could squeek 5500 in road gear and 4th for everything else and even in the 7500 it never labored the motor .for the two years that we ran it it made for a long season for everybody. As long as my buddy did not try runnen the no RPM limit classes it was bullet proof , the weak link was push rods . And only one time that she got a second was the day the fuel pump took a dump at the 275 foot mark and the guy that got me only got me by a foot other wise it would have been a gate shot .

Thanks for the info. Two things. We pull in a club with a 4 MPH speed limit. Once you get to a certain horsepower proper balancing and the right tires seems to become much more important. As far as machining, the only thing I can't do myself is stroking or grinding a crankshaft, or custom making pistons.
