Farmall Super A buying questions with Hyd Problems

I looked at my great uncles super A. He has passed on there selling off the farm. They wanted $3000.00 for the super A. It has had recently many of the gaskets replaced, new rear rims good back tires and paint is really good just missing the battery box. It also has a 5 year old Woods L306 6 foot mower on it that looks great.
My problem with it is that the Hyd's work sometimes and not others and then it will lift it part way and then stop and do nothing if you keep playing with the hyd control it will eventualy lift and catch like nothing is wrong with it. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I know the new woods 6' mower will cost $2400.00 but I don't want to get into a mess with the Hyds would it cost $100 to fix or $600 to fix you know? I have a 1945 farmall A with a woods 5 foot mower so I don't know if I want to buy then sell mine. Reason I am looking is I have a factory front blade for a super A and I want the Tractor to go with it!!! the plus side with this tractor is that it has the industrial front end with frame support. So is this tractor worth taking or keep what I have and wait for a super A with a good Hyd system?
oh yeah it has rear weights and chains I could sell I already have those.
please any advice

Since the tractor was owned by a relative you probably have some idea on how the tractor was maintained. You probably can not buy any used tractor that doesn't require some repairs. That mower is going to be a big factor if that tractor is sold at auction and will probably go for more than they're asking. You can install a pressure gauge on the pump and see what the hydraulic pressure is. Here's a parts breakdown on the Pesco hydraulic pump. Hal

One more thing is after filling the resivour leave the plug out of filler. Start tractor and cycle the lift back and forth several times. This will bleed any air that is in system.

Should be the same hydraulics as is on my C. The fill is on the left side while sitting in the seat. Square plug on the side of the hydraulic unit below the gas tank. Fill just below the plug. As someone else stated if the oil is fine check the screen. Should be 4 bolts just to the side and below the plug if memory serves correctly. Does not sound like a pump to me and these are pretty durable. My C has been working for well over 50 years with no rebuild on the pump or hydraulic unit. I did have to replace the o-ring in the pump as it was leaking into the crankcase, and a couple o-rings on the control rods, but it still works very well, and I dont think these are that difficult or expensive to rebuild, although the pump might get expensive if you had to buy one.

Even if you have to get a rebuilt pump I think its still a good deal. I forget what I had to pay for mine but it wasnt all that costly.

I think all our tractors have the top and the right side of the battery box missing. You can get reproduction boxes if you need it. Minor thing.

Mornin Chad, That sounds like a good deal especially with that mower !

I agree with George, check your hyd oil level. Even if the unit needed a rebuild, the kit from IH is only a bit over $100 ! Also another culprit would possibly be a partially plugged up filter screen.

Have you checked the oil level in the hydraulic resivour? Sounds to me like it is low on oil.
