Volt regulator question

OK...the voltage regulator on my W4 didnt seem to be regulating as i was charging around 15-20 amps all the time. So i replaced it with a new one. Worked fine for a bit...then amp gauge was showing no charge at all and a discharge with the lights on. All wiring seemed ok so i got a screw driver under the hood and whacked the cover of the regulator. Started the thing up and now it charges again. What is going on with the brand new regulator? Why would the coil or contacts be sticking? Just another crappy china made repro part or is there something i should be doing in the hook-up? Thanks for any advice.

Older tractors had generators instead of alternators. So when the regulator or generator wires are re-connected you have to polarize the generator by placing a jump wire forn the BAT to the GEN connections for 2 seconds. You'll see a spark which is ok. Not doing this will cause the regulator contacts to fuse together so you're always draining the battery.

I agree - most likely a crappy repro regulator. However before replacing it with another regulator, try running a jumper wire from the regulator base to the grounded battery post. If that corrects the problem you'll need to clean up the ground path between the regulator and the tractor frame. Or make the temporary ground jumper wire permanent.

MOST likely, the field relay contacts have already burned or oxidized.

Still have your old regulator (made with QUALITY AMERICAN metal in the contacts)?

Put 'er back on and verify the charging voltage, and 'tweak" it a bit, as needed.
