I have a 1941 Farmall A with a cracked block (C113) between two of the cylinders (two cracks total, one crack between cylinders 1 and 2 and the other crack between cylinders 2 and 3). The sleeves appear perfect. When I drained the antifreeze and oil, there were no signs of trouble. However, I have no idea how long either fluid was in the engine (they could have been changed right before I purchased the tractor). Do I need to worry about these cracks? If they are a problem, any suggestions on repair techniques? Thanks! Bryan

have the same cracks on my Allis B the head gasket seals them-- no water in the oil and no leaks I would not worry about a couple small cracks

Bryan,

Three basic options , first if it didn't open up you can probably ignore it . Second-
replace the block and compared to the third that is most likely cheaper. Third - being that have done several this is the how to .
Install cross bolts between the cylinders to
pull the block back together, grind out and weld the cracks , remachine the deck , locate center line and bore the pilot bore and finally
bore the counterbore to diameter and depth .

I agree, Many of these engines were cracked there without problems. I would cross bolt with stainless steel rods, just to limit further cracking, and call it good. JimN

I have one in service for 5 years like that. A fellow that seemed to know told me that the crack just helped a little more coolant circulate through there.

I would probably have the block magnafluxed to discover if the cracks are just external or if there are also internal cracks. If they are just external any compitent welding shop will be able to repair the cracks with cast iron rod. If done correctly the repair should be nearly invisible. Good luck Tallperson
