Which Head Gasket for SuperA with 3 1/4 Pistons?

I am replacing the head gasket on my Super A which has no water pump. At some point before the tractor entered my hands a 3 1/4" overbore kit was installed. My question is this - What is the proper head gasket to use? My local dealer ordered a 366300R3 but it has smaller holes for use with a water pump. The only other option from CaseIH is part # 366301R1 which is for the C113 engine. Will this head gasket work with the larger 3 1/4" diameter pistons? My dealer is not all that helpfull - He will order the gasket in but if it doesn't fit, I will need to pay a 10% restocking fee (gasket is $52 Canadian). Someone have a 366301 gasket they could measure the opennings for the pistons and let me know the size?

Thanks,

Hartford

Hartford: I'd suggest you do the same as IH did over 50 years ago. When they increased the cubic inch from 113 to 123 or 135, in all cases they added a water pump, and larger radiator. It only stands to reason, one goes with larger bore for more power, more power generates more heat and more heat takes more cooling. Since you are installing this in a Super A you will still have the smaller radiator. For this reason, I'd go water pump. Your doing a lot of work there, may as well make it last.

I fully realize, folks are going to respond to my post, saying, "I ran my 123+ cubic inches without a water pump for years tractor pulling." That may well be, a pull at a tractor pull lasts precisely 3 minutes, and they do it 5, 10, 15 or 20 times per year. They should try putting the tractor under load 8 to 10 hours per day, if they truly want to test their engine and ability of the cooling system.

Hugh, I don't pull it , but I do work the snot out of my 1949 C with 123 pistons and no water pump. However it does have to have water added every couple of days during hot weather as it will slowly boil it away. It was this way when I bought it in 1975 and I didn't even know it until 1998 when I had to replace the crankshaft due to me breaking it with a sledge trying to drive that puuley on. Anyhow it does work and run fine.

George: You said it all, work the snot out of the tractor, water boils away in two days. Maybe it would last longer with a water pump.

How hard did you hit it with the sledge to brake the crank? A former neighbor hit his knee on one such swing, walked with a stiff leg rest of his life.

I knocked the he!! out of it. Me and another guy took turns for an hour trying to drive that thing on. It only cracked it, and I used it for 2 years before it finally broke. I was side dressing tobacco and it started rattling. When I tore it down you could see were the crank had been cracked about half way through for a while. So I assumed I had cracked it with the 10 lb sledge. That was before I learned about putting that pulley in the oven.

Looks like it has to be 366301R2. Last night I added this reply to the previous thread, but it is several pages back by now:

Even ignoring the the Rx update type variations, I have seen 5 different part numbers for the various C-113, C-123 and early C-135 engines. The differences I am aware of are the water passage size (smaller for water pump) and the size of the opening at each cylinder. The original C-113 gasket would overlap the edge of each cylinder if it was a larger bore, so a change was required for 3 1/8" bore engines. At one time, different gaskets were available for different bore engines. The only currently available numbers I could find are 366300R3 and 366301R2. Since 366300R3 is correct for a C-135, it is OK for a 3 1/4" bore with a water pump. 366301R2 is for engines with no water pump and I am guessing it is OK for a 3 1/4" bore as well.
The key to all this is the Farmall C Parts Catalog. It is the only model that had an optional water pump and it lists these 2 gaskets based on water pump or not.

If you have already installed 366300R3 and were using the same before, I would probably not go back and change it. It might become a problem if you run the tractor hard.

If it has no water pump it will need the other one. Or you may want to consider a water pump with pistons that big. I measured one from a B with 3 inch pistons and a C with 3 and 1/8th pistons and and both measured 3 and 3/8 inch. The one off a Super C with 3 and 1/4 pistons was 3 and 1/2 inches across. It was dary and couldnt see the part numbers.
