Super C water pump

I have a Farmall Super C that is over heating in cool weather without a load on engine, just cutting grass with a belly mower.
The water in the radiator never moves when I look at it with the radiator cap off. Bubbles will come up but the water does not move even when the tractor is warmed up. I assume the water pump is defective. Am I correct? Any tips on changing the water pump, looks rather staight forward.
Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Ray Norlin

Re: Super C water pump UPDATE in reply to Ray Norlin, 05-12-2007 18:44:29
Just got back from where the tractor is at and I'm thinking after doing some research and reading that this is not a super C (like my sales receipt says) but a C. There is NO water pump on this tractor and there is no thermostat either. Apparently some of the C's had some sort of a thermosyphon system???? to circulate coolant. I will investigate further to get the radiator flushed if needed. There is a pressure radiator cap. Does this make a difference on a thermosyphon system?

New question. Can I put a water pump on a C from a super C? If so what do I need and how is it done.

Thanks, Ray

Also, the serial number will tell you the story and also there is no thermostat in that engine.

You dont seem to be getting any answers but here is what I have learned.----- -----You have a C not a super C. Super C's have a 123 engine with a water pump. Your C is a 113 with Thermosiphon cooling whch means it circulates from heat convection ie: hot water rises and pushes cooler water down ward. I worked on a 113 several moths ago and I am sure you can add a water pump but that is time consuming and costly. (new fan belts and pulleys etc.) Thermosiphons work great on that engine if the radiator and block are well cleaned. Also, a non pressurized cap should be used. Also, check the guage and be sure it is working rite.

Hi Ray, I'm replacing my water now. It was making a noise and then it started to leak. My IH Dealer said a new one would cost about $350 through case. He said he could get me one from another vendor for a lot less. It came with a gasket ready to mount. It cost me $98 with a $20 core charge. Hope this helps,

Unless the pump leaks or has a bad bearing, it is probably the thermostat as mentioned earlier. Our SC has only had 1 water pump replaced, & that was only 6 years ago. Bearings got noisy. New pump probably won't last that long.

I had the same problem with mine during hot weather. With the thermostst open the water still didn't circulate. Turned out to be the radiator was dirty. I would think if the pump turns and doesn't leak it would be OK.

Does it have a thermostat in it? Is your thermostat opening? I think I would check that before diving into the water pump

I have cleaned the radiator, inside and out. I did not see a thermostat when radiator and hoses were off the tractor. New hoses were also installed. Is the thermostat in the water pump tube? If so there was no thermostat noticed but I really was not looking for one.

NO, the thermostat is in the top outlet that the fan assembly is attached to.
