My 30 year old Craftsman impact wrench, 1/2 inch, spilled it's guts today. What's a good replacement nowadays for less than 100 bucks. I don't use it that often.

Check out ebay...

Look for Ingersoll-Rand (IR). The old model 231 was the industry standard for years and has only been improved upon. See what you can find...

I just looked for myself. There are several really good tools listed including several 231, 2131, 2132 and 2707. Many will go for under $100.

Just one clarification. The 231's used to be made in the USA. Not sure about the quality now coming from China, but I still wouldn't be too afraid.

Gordo,

All of our Air Impacts used to be Craftsman. They did not hold up very well when using them daily, always had to replace them every year or so.

My brother gave me a 1/2 inch drive "Earthquake" Impact from Harbor Freight at Christmas 2 or 3 years ago. It gets used daily, and so far it has been a good unit. It is on sale for $79.99.

Their site has this to say about this impact:

625 ft. lbs. of torque out-muscles other 1/2" wrenches. Same design as the guns used by most pit crews. · Twin-hammer delivers more torque to the anvil, less vibration · Six speed regulator · Forward/reverse · Protective rubber boot Maximum torque: 625 ft. lbs; Torque range: 40 to 400 ft. lbs; Free speed: 6600 RPM forward, 6800 RPM reverse ; Standard bolt capacity: 5/8"; Air consumption: 4.7 SCFM; Air inlet: 1/4"-18 NPT; Overall length: 7-3/4"; Tool weight: 6.6 lbs

ITEM 2623-2VGA

Here is a picture of it:

I also bought one of their 3/4" "Earthquake" Impact Guns as well. Have no complaints at all about either one. The 3/4" is on sale as well and is listed for $$199.99. Here it is:

I also have used both their 1/2" and 3/4" Impact Socket Sets. They have held up very well, and have a lifetime replacement if one fails.

Another Craftsman would be a good choice - they have a couple under $200 that are nice.

I have a $25 cheapo right now and it is adequate for the lug nuts on the car and van, but I wouldn't want to use it daily on the farm. We still have Dad's Craftsman from the mid-70's out there... :o)

I'd try taking back to sears and see if they will replace it for free.. I have never had then refuse to warranty any craftsman tool. See if you can save yourself some money first.. Tallperson

Craftsman has lifetime warranty on hand tools, but not on power tools. for a decent replacement try the Harbor Freight Earthquake Gun.
