I am restoring an H and down to my final painting before i put the hood, grill, and gas tank on, does anyone know for sure which pieces and parts are supposed to be painted black from factory?

I realize that this doesn't have a lot to do with the original post, but I just got a Dealer Security manual titled Productive Tool Equipment. It deals with how to set up an efficient shop and the tools needed for the "new" letter series tractors. There is a picture of an H on steel setting in an IH shop, and the wheels appear to be painted with the dark blue paint that the implements used.

Nothing was painted black from the factory.

You know, I have come to the conclusion that if all a guy wanted to do was bring a Farmall H or M back to original condn paint wise, you wouldn't have to be that careful. I think function ruled over appearance in those days. Comfort wasn't a big deal either. Just my opinion, I don't have anything against a glossy paint job that you can see to shave in, but I don't think that's the way it was.

I have heard older men fuss about them looking to good. My dad said the new ones they bought didn't shine nearly as much as the restored ones of today. Gramps bought a new H in 47 and said it did have runs in the paint.

heck back when they came through you could see runs in some of the paint I think some of the cast parts were diped, paint on the tires ect....
Alot of tractors out there today have alot better paint then when they came from factory.

No Andrew, 99% of the tractors out there today have better paint than what the factory put on them.

I was there in those days and you are right about function overriding form. Farmers back in those days would not believe that the people that own these old tractors today are concerned about everthing being just like it left factory.

The axels were masked, so were black (To facilitate moving the wheel casts on them) The distributer was masked... Other than that, spray away.

They weren't really black. More like a laquer.

The axles were masked and not painted. How about the ends of the axles? Were they painted?

Also there are a couple of plates that should be masked off, like the serial number, adn the badge on the stater and generator.
