Jim,

OK, now you have me worried. The only oblong (odd)holes are one at each end of the head. The rest of the holes are round.

I do not have a water pump. The part number for the head gasket I purchased is 366300R3, which is the same as the one removed from motor when head was removed. Is the correct one? Pistons are 3.25 inches in diameter.

Thanks,

Hartford

Hi Everyone, This is a rookie question. Does "This side out" on the head gasket mean "this side up" or "this side towards head"? Are most of you using NAPA copper spray on gasket to help with seal (I am using CASE-IH head gasket)? Thanks.

Jim Becker

Make sure you have the right gasket. With no water pump, you should have the larger (odd shaped) water passages in the gasket.

Even ignoring the the Rx update type variations, I have seen 5 different part numbers for the various C-113, C-123 and early C-135 engines. The differences I am aware of are the water passage size (smaller for water pump) and the size of the opening at each cylinder. The original C-113 gasket would overlap the edge of each cylinder if it was a larger bore, so a change was required for 3 1/8" bore engines. At one time, different gaskets were available for different bore engines. The only currently available numbers I could find are 366300R3 and 366301R2. Since 366300R3 is correct for a C-135, it is OK for a 3 1/4" bore with a water pump. 366301R2 is for engines with no water pump and I am guessing it is OK for a 3 1/4" bore as well.

The key to all this is the Farmall C Parts Catalog. It is the only model that had an optional water pump and it lists these 2 gaskets based on water pump or not.

If you have already installed 366300R3 and were using the same before, I would probably not go back and change it. It might become a problem if you run the tractor hard.

www.caseih.com indicates that it is not a C113 or C123 gasket, it is for a C135, such as the 340, which has a water pump. The stroke of the C135 is 4 1/16 inches, yours is 4, thus yours is about a 133 cid. Both yours and the C135 have a 4.25 bore. Your engine has been bored, if it did not overheat, then it is probably ok, although the non-water pump tractors have bigger passages, I believe. Jim are others may have other ideas, as I don't know what happens to the cooling when you bore a thermosiphon block and have to use a different gasket.

Thanks for the link to the caseih web site. Under Super A I have two choices for head gasket, either a 366301R1 for C113 (3X4) engine or 366300R1 for the C123 engine (3 1/8X4).

I am sure my cylinders are 3 1/4"

What gasket should I have ordered and does the R1 to R3 change mean something?

Thanks,

Hartford

Ask your question again, and maybe someone who knows can help you -- My opinion is that you have to use the C135 gasket because it matches your 3.25 inch bore, but I don't know what it does to the water passages. Both the C123 and C135 had water pumps. R3 is the latest version, it is downward compatible with the earlier versions of R2 and R1. Many IH parts are that way.

Hartford: Jim will probably respond on that he has a parts book. I don't and it's been 15 years since I had mine apart. My memory is now over 30 years and under 10. Proof that what goes in late in life doesn't stay there as well.

Hi Hugh,

Did you make it down to Miller Tire last weekend? I just received their catalogue yesterday. Prices seem rather reasonable.

Hartford: I was down to Millers, did a bit of touring around western Ohio and eastern Indiana. Interesting estabilshment Ed Miller has there, couple of miles out of Wauseon, quite rural on the old Miller farmstead. My guess is he has about 30,000 square feet of building there, and just about every imaginable farm tire ever made.

It was a nice sunny day, lot of folks across the countryside tinkering with old tractors. I expect some of them were YTer's. To the folks working on tractors in Ohio and Indiana, April 28th, if you saw an elderly couple driving a white Chevy pickup with Ontario plates, and gawking in your yard, it was only me.
