Camshaft Plug

Thought I had it figured out, but nope. Got a "plug" from the IH man, not what I thought it was going to be. It's more like a freeze plug that I can see is already installed at the rear of the crankcase dirctly behind the camshaft. Is this what the manual is talking about? "Installing camshaft, be sure to intall plug in end of camshaft." There is a small opening on the end of the shaft. I thought this was something to close that. I now think that should be as it is, and a certain amount of oil flows out the camshaft back into the oilcase? So I don't need anything, do I? Or am I still lost, as usual?
Thanks,
Brian

if its a small hole less than 1/4 inch or so, its part of the oil gallery to feed oil to the cam, dont plug it! if you can post a picture, if the cam is out still, look at the other cam bearings, you should see a hole in them too.

Thanks Glenn,

Yes, the hole is in the end, and I had pretty much figured out my error, reading the manual wrong. I haven't plugged it up. Wouldn't know what to stick in there if I wanted to. The manual just confused me when it said "Install plug at end of camshaft". Should say something more like, "Make sure freeze plug installed in crankcase behing camshaft". But then, I'm pretty dumb too.

Now where did I put those darned camshaft thrust plate bolts??

Thanks again,

Brian

I don't know what model of tractor you are working on. but on the A,B,BN,C,Super C, series of tractors, the plug on the rear of the cam shaft is a core plug, which is what some people would call a freeze plug. All it does is keep the oil from that rear cam bearing from running out.
