Hey guys, I'm trying to find some way to smooth the rows out of my pasture. I have 23 acres that used to be farmland (sugar cane) and it still has remnants of the rows. I am using it for grazing land and driving across it sure is rough going. I was thinking that I might drag my discs lightly through it just to chop up the surface but then I don't want to kill my grass.

What would you guys recommend for this????

Patrick,
The football stadium beside us has a huge roller. It must be 12 foot wide and I bet its 3 foot in diamter. I bet it weigh a few tons, they use some big JD tractor to pull it. I'm trying to find a good roller. Dad got me a headstock for the conveyors from the quarries at work, but its not wide enough, if he could get another one, I could run them side by side. Tha bad thing about rolling it is the ground has to have some moisture in it. And with moisture comes tire tracks, not sure how the pros really roll them. Its not a one time thing either. I guess someone could pull a roller behind their bushog. Since its a pasture, its doubtful it gets mowed. Rolling is not a one time deal, but is more of a long term solution.

Assuming it is bermuda you should disk it up until it looks clean. You'll have good grass in a few weeks if it ever gets hot. You'll still have ridges but they will be rounder and smoother. You just about need a blade to really get rid of them, a bulldozer or grader would work.

The other thing would be to sell the ridges as top soil, load them and haul them off.

The only good way is to plow it up and start fresh. I had land rented that was very rough so I planted corn in so much of it a year and sowed it back down in grass. The next year I plowed a different plot and done it the same way. The worst thing is after 6 years of plowing and sowing grass, I got it in good shape and the owners son wanted it then. I used a disk one year to try this and it made it worse, then I had big clumps of sod that just stayed there and were really rough. I suppose if you went over it enough times it would get better, but I found it is easier with the plow.

What kind of grass is out there? If it is bermudagrass, you can disk it and the bermuda will come back. Most of the seeded grasses will not survive the cultivation.
Is it a new or established stand of grass? Why I ask is that new seedings would theoretically have less top growth present and you could possibly harrow the ridges down if it wasn't too hard of soil.

I would disc it several acres at a time. Pull a float or bar behind the disc to help level it out. The grass will grow in a few weeks and then do anout 4 or 5 acres. That way you always will have some grass.
