I bought a 1971 yellow and white Farmall Cub that I am trying to get going to mow some grass. The motor seems down on power even for a Cub. There is a lot of blowby coming out the oil breather/dipstick area and barely has enough power to run the mower. I checked the compression and it has 125 psi in all four cylinders. This seems to me to be in the normal range for compression. The tractor has been sitting for a while. Will this get better or do I need to look for something else? Tuneup? Carb. rebuild? New rings? Will adjusting the valve clearance help power. Any comments appreciated. Thanks

How big is that mower. How tall is the grass? With a cub you have to take small bites. Ten horse ain't much. First gear unless you get real lucky.

You didnt say if the blades are sharp and how tall of what kind of grass are you working with all makes a difference. Just remember its a CUB not a lot of power to start with

I was trying to run the mower in grass a couple of inches high on level ground. Had to raise the deck to let the clutch out to get going. I worked on it some last night. Looked like the points and dist. cap were burnt pretty bad. I'll give it a tuneup and see how she runs. thanks.

Those compression readings sound great. I would do a complete tuneup and check that valve lash.
You should check your fuel system for any dirt or rust. That includes the gas tank, gas line and carburetor. They probably need cleaning. I would change the oil and filter too. Make sure you watch your oil pressure gauge when making an engine start. These Cub's sometimes lose their oil pressure. Their oil pump is at the rear of the engine and doesn't hang vertically down from the engine as the other IH tractor engines do.

If that ever happens don't keep running the engine. Post back on here, there's a procedure
for fixing that. Hal

Thanks Hal. I remembered to look at the pressure gage after it was running for awhile. I was lucky it was up about 3/4 of the way on the gage.

One thing you might do that will only help and not hurt the engine is put about a 1/4 cup of tranny fluid in each cylinder. Let it sit a day or 2 then pull the plugs and spin it over to clear the cylinders out. Doing that will help clean thing up inside and loosen any stuck rings, also cleans carbon out. It may or may not help but since you said it sit for a while it can only help a little

make sure your mower blades are sharp and that it is turning in the right direction, they make left and right discharge models and I have seen the wrong blades installed. also make sure that at cutting height the front of the mower is 1/4 to 1/2 inch lower than the rear to prevent cutting the grass twice.
