I'm looking at a 3 point, 3 bottom,14 inch, Model 531 IH Plow. Anyone know how they perform? How well do they pair up with a Farmall 706?

I have been plowing all of my life and have never had any luck with fully mounted plows. the semi-mounted steerable plows are wonderful.

Maybe you never got them adjusted right. I have plowed all my life as well with both kinds with no problems.

George: I farmed a good bit of my farming career with two guys that had no use whatever for a 3 point hitch plow. My dad and my next door neighbor were dyed in the wool trailer plow men. They never made any mistakes on 3 point plow adjustment as they damn well wouldn't even use one. The closest my dad came was the one point fast hitch plow on the 130. These two were great at observing what was happening on other farms.

I bought both farms owned by these gentlemen and found myself owning 5 plows, 4 trailers and the 1 point fast hitch plow 2x12. The trailers were No.8- 2x14. No.60- 4x16 plow chief, No.60- 3x16 super chief and a No.60- 4x16 super chief. Total of 15 bottoms, however I didn't have 5 guys to put in tractor seats, to operate all these plows.

It had been my intention to keep the 1 point and 2x14 trailer, sell the other three and put a plow behind my new 1066 to load it. The IH dealer had a 510- 5x16 super chief, he'd been sitting on it for awhile, everyone seemed afraid of it, just didn't want to tackle it with their 706s, 756s and 766s, thuss he offered me that plow for $2,000. in the fall of 1975. I told him I'd try it, thus he delivered it and hitched it to 1066, left the operator's manual in the cab. I didn't go near for several days as I wanted to see the reaction and possible use of this contraption by my dad and neighbor, both in their 60s at that time, and both knew which fields I wanted to plow. The neighbor was the first to move on it as it was parked behind his house. He called my dad, said, " come see the new plow, it's 3 point hitch and it works, plus the tractor has a cab." That fall we plowed 350 acres, I got to plow 5 of those acres, they wouldn't let me have it, and their reasoning, both had spent 40+ Canadian falls plowing without a cab, this might be their last kick at the can and I would have at least 40 years ahead of me for this experience.

These gentlemen both could have entered competition plowing just about anywhere and placed in top 10. They could have made 3 point hitch plows work, just stubborn I guess. Back in 1975, I found all this quite amusing, old guys and then quite new technology. The next spring my dad sold the No.8 for $75. oneday when I was away. I sold all the other trailers for $2,000., same as I paid for the semi-mount. I said, "Dad now you know why I wanted to keep the No.8, we had to have a trailer plow around." Truth is I wanted to save it for competition plowing, antique classes. You give me a Farmall H, No.8 2x14 with Canadian ACE bottoms, and I'll woop the H@!! out of you 3 point guys at any plowing competition. In fact here in Canada where competition plowing is big, the 3 point guys won't even compete in the same class as trailers. They need a class of their own.

Hugh, I use the old no 8 as well and like it quite well. The 3 point mounted plow will work fine, most folks have a hard time getting them adjusted properly. For the last 25 years or longer mounted plows are nearly all that is used here. This is because here most tractors are small compared to the giants of corn country. The most common plow here now is a 3 bottom fully mounted plow and yes lots of folks do a pi$$ poor job of plowing with them, but there are some of us that can adjust them to work quite well. Like you said about the no 8, I just hook to it and go. I also use a couple fast hitch plows that work well too. The best mounted plows I have used are the 531 IH and the 81 MF which is an Oliver plow, nearly all other mounted plows will not plow with either one of these. I have watched guys mess with a mounted plow and make the biggest mess of plowing you ever seen, but most of this is operator difficulty.

George: One of the biggest problems I've seen with mounted plows is folks trying to plow with them, using too wide wheel tread setting. Of course the other big one folks trying to plow with worn out plow wear parts. Far too many folks think of the plow as just a digger, and that exactly what they do with them, DIG BIG HOLES.

I had a guy e mail me one night, right turning 3 bottom, 3 point hitch plow. After several e mails, I finally got it out of him, he was trying to plow with his left wheel in the furrow.

Another time I rented a parcel of land from a retired career military guy. He had a Super C he used for plowing snow and had bought a 2x12 trailer plow as he had planned on some gardening. His wife asked me if I'd plow their garden patch as her husband had owned the trailer plow 5 years, and they were yet to harvest a garden. I went around to the garden patch with my 130 and 2x12 fast hitch plow. Not hard to see why they never harvested a garden. There were furrows every which way in the tall grass, and holes in there the depth of the 5.00x15 front tire. For a spell, I thought I'd have to go for the big tractor just to get over some of these holes. I got it looking half decent. Stopped at the front where she and hubby were enjoying a beer, mainly to tell her I'd run my big disk through it next day to get it level enough for her walk behind tiller. This was my chance to get a dig in about hubby's plowing. I turned to her and said, " You remember the section in the bible where it describes pounding plow shares into swords and vice versa depending on the need. I've decided that once we turn the swords into plow shares, we should not give them back to a military man." She was a big woman, and shook the whole wooden deck laughing, he was not overly amused. I don't intend on this insulting most military men, this guy had no farm background before his military days. I was just a quote that fitted the time and place.

Hugh, I see that here from guys who have farmed all ther live and still can't adjust a plow. Anyone who can't plow with a Super C is lost. I have a guy that helps me some who also helps another local farmer who as you said does not even adjust his wheels for plowing, and he makes a awful mess. He told Doug that was what the disk was for, to straighten up the mess with. Being a military man myself, I find your comments to that guy quite ammusing myself, and think you are right everyone wasn't cut out for this, Kinda like me and my computer difficulties. and I do remember that part of the Bible.

We bought a 706 new in 1968. It came with a semi mounted, 4 bottom 16" plow. I still have both of them. Not familiar with the exact plow you are talking about, but the 706 will play with 3- 14's

I agree with George. I've got a 531 cut down to 2x16 plows with the Super Chief bottoms and it works like a dream.

Gramps ran a 706 with a fast hitch 4x16 plow (don't remember the model) for years on his farm. Never had trouble until he tried to plow a field that hadn't been touched in 10 years. Ended up cutting it down to 3 to get the job donw. Your 706 shouldn't have any problem with 3 bottoms.

The 706 should have 16s on it, but 14s will work fine. The 531 is one of the best plows ever built by anybody. I have a set of 531s with 14 inch bottoms and a set of 420s with 16 inch bottoms and the 531 does twice as good a job as the 420. Of course my 420 has plow chief slat bottoms on it and the 531 has Super Chief bottoms on it.
