plugs get a gap of .025 and points are to be gapped at .020

Check the Owner's Manual for the correct point gap. I think it is a little less than stated above.

Eltoro Is correct .020" when on the highest point of one of the cam lobes. Wiggle the shaft up and down, and away from and toward the block to check for bushing wear. if you can feel it at all, it probably needs to be checked with a dial indicator. .001, .0015" is about all that can be allowed. if more, it will cause timing issues. If your M is starting poorly, the heel on the points maybe worn a little. You might just need to regap them and reset the timing. In any case, cleaning won't hurt.

You can still get the original Operator's Manual for your M. In the maintenance section it covers changing the points and resetting the timing in detail. It is money well spent.

Set them at .020" and clean them as Old suggested.
If they're not pitted I would not replace them.

Pull the cap, then the rotor and then the dust cover. Look at the points and if they aren't nice and shiney then you either need to clean then with some emery cloth and thin card board or replace them . Set them at .025 I think, if I remember right that is I haven't looked in the book so that may not be right but it would be real close

James, In the event they are only gray oxide coated but otherwise good (NOT badly burned or pitted), I clean/buff/polish them non abrasively by dragging a dollar bill or shop cloth etc between them to try n shine them up. In the event they are badly burned or pitted or carboned up badly, I replace them. Its possible to use a point file to clean them up n knock off carbon and high build ups to make them run again, but once you harsh abrasivley remove the shiny silvery coating thay wont last as long.

Look for pits or build ups when you inspect them and a point file will dress them up but if they are too deeply pitted and badly carboned n burned Id get a new set.

A weak or bad or improper sized or poorly connected or grounded condensor can contribute to premature point failure as well as excess current from an improper sized ballast resistor or the incorrect coil.

If in doubt Id replace them and the condensor if its suspect. Check n clean all the grounds n connections n terminals etc.

Ol John T and all
