I find these on Ebay, but have never actually seen them on a tractor. Anyone every seen or used one and can explain the purpose and where they are mounted?

Hi, Mike.

My uncle’s Allis Chalmers WD-45 had one of those (with a Persian orange housing, of course) mounted at the top of the left fender and facing rearward. As others have said, it was “sort of a taillight that’s better than none at all.”

They face to the rear on the back of the tractor. You turn those on for transporting down the road at night. The normal work lights would blind drivers coming up behind you.

Safety item of the 50's...

Mike,
Looks like it might be the top half of this type of light. There is a switch on the main work light to turn off the work light and turn on the little red light for road use. HTH. Larry

Its purpose is to be a tail light for transporting the tractor down the road. See, most people are apparently too dumb to notice that the light they're heading toward is straight in front of them, and getting closer and closer and closer, so they just plow into the back of the tractor instead of slowing down and realizing that there's a tractor ahead of them.

This was a lame attempt by the tractor manufacturers to have a red tail light so people wouldn't drive straight into the rear of the tractor.

Those go in the top of the rear tailight on some tractors. They are nice because you have a red rear light too. They call the light a "piggy back" rear light when this light is in the large rear light.
