farmall M looses power after running for awhile

The farmall M that I have runs well for about 15 minutes and then loses power and wants to quit. Then if you let it sit for awhile, it will run well for awhile after startup and then it wants to quit again. It is not overheating. I am just a lady with no mechanical experience. This tractor was my deceased husbands and is all I have to cut the fields with. It has been almost completely restored. Is there someone who could give me some ideas so I can try to fix it.

I checked the points, distributor cap, the condenser, rotor and fuel lines this weekend. My friend drove it and we discovered that the carburator bowl was running out of gas. When the tractor was stopped and allowed to idle it would go again for awhile. Does the carburator have junk in it?

If you are pulling a mower, or PTO powered implement, make sure that a bearing on the implement isn't getting tight & causing the power loss. This could also be caused by low/ no gear lube in a gear box on the implement. Worth a look. Don't answer everyone individually, or you'll never get done. Just post it in a "subject" thread.

Sorry to learn of your loss. If fuel is not the problem, check points& condenser in the magneto or distributor-- also the rotor in the distributor cap. Might be worth a look in the oil bath air cleaner cup which is on the left side of the tractor just ahead of the gas tank, to see if there is a buildup of dirt. Unlikely, but if all else doesn't help---.

My Super A sometimes does the same thing! Once I corrected it by adjusting the float slightly. Most of the time I think it's fuel starvation, either with junk in the tank, carb, or that tiny hole in the gas cap (which can be plugged even when it "looks" OK). BTW, what grade of gasoline should we be using these days? Premium?

They should run on the cheap stuff. I don't know how, but have heard folks talk about the high octane gas burning the valves. Since I have ran the cheap stuff for ever I haven't seen this problem.

I run 87. I tried premium once but I din't see any gains in the power, it didn't run any better either so I keep running 87 octane.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband, Linda.

Problems with loss of power after warm-up often come from one of two areas: (a) insufficient fuel flow (fuel flow has time to catch up when tractor shut off, so runs well from start), and (b) expansion due to heat causing an electrical component to fail.

I like to start with fuel flow first, because it's easiest to check. Turn on the gas at the cut-off and pull the drain plug on the bottom of the carburetor, if your M has one. You should have a good, steady flow about the diameter of the fuel line. A trickle may not be good enough.

In this case, since the problem is intermittent, you may want to run a full tank though, to give the problem a chance to occur. Make sure and catch the gasoline in a sutiable container for re-use (USD 2.79 locally!).

If there is water in the system, it usually comes out first. Obviously, in that case, the gasoline itself is suspect.

Fuel flow not ok? Check sediment bowl and tank for crud and rust (you'll want a gasket handy for replacing the bowl). It may be necessary to remove and clean any screens in the tank or carb. More detailed instructions can be provided in the event this is necessary.

Fuel flow ok? Check back in with us.

Good luck and keep us posted. Model M can be very troublefree and I believe there may be several thousand of them still running.

From what you described it sounds like it may be fuel starvation. Does it still have the sediment bowl? That would be a small glass jar under the gas tank. Is the valve open all the way on the sediment bowl? There may also be some junk inside the gas tank. Also the gas cap may not be the vented type. Next you get a chance take the gas cap off and rap a small rag around the filler neck on the gas tank. Secure it with a rubber band. If that cures what ails it then all you need is a vented gas cap. Sorry to hear about your husband.
