H vs. W4

I found a nice straight W4 at the local dealer, thinking on maybe trading my wide front H for it.

I just don't have enough acreage to wheel that wide front girl around!

I know that they have the same engine, but can anyone comment as to the usefullness of a W4;
I plan to use it with my pull type rotary cutter, haul some wood with a trailer and maybe rig up a snow plow as well as do some minor plowing with a single bottom trailer plow.

Are these tractors more manueverable than a wide front H (factory front)? Seems so much smaller than an H.

Brian,
We had both tractors. The W4 was used more for pulling. We found that it would outpull our H. We did have the weights on it and fluid in the tires. The H was more manuaverable. We used the W4 for tillage, snowblowing, and pulling wagons. It was also nice for skidding trees out of the woods. The H we used for cutting hay, and raking. I liked the standards better, but Dad liked the row crops. I think it is all preference. When it came to pulling though, we both agrred the W4 was better. It would lift the front end off the ground until the drawbar hit, and pull there all day long. We also had a loader on the W4, I wouldn"t recommend that. It was tough to use, but it is what we had. It was an old Farmhand with the cables to control the bucket.

If you don't like the wide front, just get a narrow front and sell the wide front and probably get $400-$500 for the wide front alone. The W4 also has a wide front as that was standard for that tractor. I would keep the H and put on a narrow front and sell the wide front if you don't like the wide front. Andy.

Hi Brian, If I could swap an H for a clean W-4, I'd do it in a heart beat. If the W series tractors were as bad as some think, they would'nt be bringing the money they are. There both good tractors in there own right. Good luck on whatever you choose.

I was going to suggest switchign the wide front to a narrow double front. Much more manuveable from what I hear.

Have you got the relocation plate that moves the wide front back several inches, for a shorter turning radius?

the w series was built for heavy drawbar and belt work, did not have the ability for a mounted cultivator.they sit a little lower to the ground, and the rear wheels arent adjustable. the h is a more versatile tractor. if you are just going to use pull type implements, the w would be a good choice, if you may have other needs, stay with the h. you can add a 3 point hitch to the h, and like allan said, find a narrow front for it if you need a narrow turning radius. or..... ...get em both!!!!!

The W4 is not going to pull as much as your H is unless you start adding weight. The small tires spin easily, and you will have a sore rear end and a sick stomach in a bumpy field in fourth gear. The improvement in turning radius will be nearly negligible. Most W4's came without hydraulics because the niche the tractor was used for usually didn't require it. If you find one with hydraulics, it is a more modern system than the H had, as it is a live hydraulic system. In my opinion, they are easier to get onto and more comfortable to sit on until you get in a bumpy field. Our W6 has had the seat replaced with a Farmall M spring and shock absorber seat, which helps, but it still doesn't ride as good as our M. I like to lean against the fenders while driving, and like having the platform steps to walk up on, instead of using the drawbar. The platform is also nice for carrying bags of seed while using the grain drill, although the ones on a W4 are smaller. It will fit in smaller and much lower places than your H, but it won't be easy to maneuver once you are in them. Also, their steering effort seems comparable to the Farmall in my opinion. It is only when the tractor is stationary that I would say the Farmall steers easier.

HEy Brian,

They make a very nice and VERY LARGE paperweight.

Sit down, cool off and let this urge pass. You don't want it; I promise you. :>)

I'd try to find a 16" single front for the H to make 'er spin around on a dime. Very easy swap.

Allan

It seems much smaller, but is essentially a few inches shorter and a foot or so less tall. The Wheels are some smaller, but for your apps, not a problem. They turn (possibly) a tad shorter than your factory WF H, but not much. They are harder to get onto, more difficult to steer, may not have hydraulics, some say the driving position is less comfortable than the H, and I would put a different (aftermarket) WFE on the H and sell the Factory unit and have change left over, and shorter turn radius. Some of those W4s didn't have hydraulics on them.
