I looked at a '44 H close to my home today. Not sure on the price yet, I'm guessing I'll offer $500 since it doesn't run and needs a number of parts. Motor has been rebuilt and was working fine so I'm told, but the tractor quit for some unknown reason and they were unable to get it started again. The farm is converting to vinyards, so the M's and H are too big, so the owner is selling. Anyway, I didn't meet the owner, as he was working out of town. But a mutual friend is putting us together for this deal. He's the one who showed me the H. He said the hydraulic pump is off the tractor and gone, and he didn't know why. I'll get more detail to that story from the owner. But I wanted to ask, the holes you see in the top pic look stright through the bottom. There is nothing there. Whatever goes inside that torque tube is completely gone, and there is no cover on the bottom. Is that all the hydraulic pump, or is there more missing out of that area than just that?

Looks like the starter tank is missing as well.
Have you sent away for your manuals yet?

Yes, starter tank is out. But pretty easy to come by. No, I don't have manuals yet. I spent that money. lol It's top on the "To get" list, up there with the tractor.

The pump will be pretty easy to find, many have been removed to lower wt. for pulling, The proper drawbar is on the ground. Buy it now, it even has rubber, and rear wts. the Wts could sell for one half the price. Letting anybody figure "what they have in it" is very poor business practice (think about what good parents have invested in their children) and some are still worthless. Doo Ittt. JimN

My friend said this guy needed to "sit down and figure what he put into the engine so he can figure out what he should ask".

If he wants me to pay for the engine overhaul, I think it will be a quick jump to no sale.

You guys are right. I think I'll tell him it's going to get a good home and full restoration, and see if that will tug on his heart strings. I'll start around $0, and go up from there.

I don't see how he could charge for any engine work if it is not running. Make him start it if he is going try to pull that on you. Whatever he says it could cost 1000 dollars or more to do a complete rebuild.

Messy! :) I like it already!

I'd offer him less though. Try $275 to $300.

Just got my '39 H for $325. He was asking $375. I would offer less than $500. You never know what you'll get into with a non-running tractor. It seems that you always spend more getting them operational/restored.

Looks like only the pump and related parts are missing.
