I looked at a '44 H close to my home today. Not sure on the price yet, I'm guessing I'll offer $500 since it doesn't run and needs a number of parts. Motor has been rebuilt and was working fine so I'm told, but the tractor quit for some unknown reason and they were unable to get it started again. The farm is converting to vinyards, so the M's and H are too big, so the owner is selling.

Anyway, I didn't meet the owner, as he was working out of town. But a mutual friend is putting us together for this deal. He's the one who showed me the H. He said it was a 12v conversion. Let me ask you, is this a 12v gen? I'm assuming the square box behind the block is a voltage regulator?

Yeah, I thought it looked rather big. I don't know what a factory Genny looks like, so I thought I should ask.

Mike, I knew you couldn"t resist Farmall Fever very long. From the comments on your post about the manifold, I think most are suggesting you offer $250 or so and see what they say. A set of new rear tires are gonna run you what, $700 or so? You can get a bunch of money in tires etc pretty quick. good luck, Gene

You can turn that engine with a small pipe wrench on the shaft coming out of the crank pulley. The engine turns ccw (sitting in seat).Distributor rotor cw.

Feel on the backside of the generator,& see if there is one of those aluminum tags that Delco put on. Our 450D has one,& it says 12 volt plus the serial no. Yours looks like a rebuilt, & sometimes the rebuilder takes them off when working on them. Of course that would mean rolling the genny out to look or using a mirror.

the motor has the casting date of year 'n' so that means the motor is probally original. N= 1944 It looks like she is a mag. i bet the mag is out on it thats why it dont run. you could try fixing up the mag and see if it will run or you can put a coil/dist on it. I would check for spark and if there is non check the impuls coupling, and lubercat if needed. lots of the mags are replaced now a days. Lokks like the manifold is a distilite/ kero burner but i do not see the temp controll lever that goes with it. it has the cast code 'j' on it and im not sure what year j is maybey 40 or 41 but it looks like old stock. If i were there i would give him up 1000 for it if it turns over and overhauled. especally if the tires are good. but i dont know if i would pay that much without hearing it run first. you could change out the mag pretty fast.

Tires are shot. The crank arm is broken on the bolster, so I can't check to make sure it's free. I'm sure it is, and will probably check it by pulling it in gear when we really get into assessing it. Like has been mentioned by others, I'm probably going to look to spend $500 or less.

From the out side a 6 volt genny and a 12 volt genny look the same. Itsa the guts or insides that tell the tail and with out haveing it checked its any bodys guess as to how its set up.

It does look kinda like one Mike. The pulley and the way the backend looks sort of looks like a 12V unit I was looking at for one of my M's.

Can't you have it rebuilt to 12V or buy the parts to do it with? Did you want to go to 12V?

I don't care if it's 6 or 12, as long as it looks somewhat original, and it starts strong. I can get a 12v battery the size of a 6v that will fit in an original battery box, so I'm not sweating that.

My old '46 has a make-shift conversion done with a car's alternator, and a non-IH mag and shotty wiring. It looked like crap. This looks workable to me. Just needs some TLC for the wirining reroute.
