Well Dave S and Old win a cookie each. It was a misadjusted throttle plate. And then I matched up carb to Gov as Old suggested. Geez, funny how smart you can get if you open the IT manual to the right page. Put the tach on there and I got the 475 and 1575 as advertised.

I think the high idle is supposed to be 1815 or 1875 for the Super H, not sure if the 1575 was the max rpm you got was at WOT or not

Yep, you're right. 1864rpm in my reference book (IT Manual). OK back to wrenchin. But as I posted I'm workin with 90+ compression so I'll be happy with 1700.And I'm using a dwell tach for 6-8 cylinder engines I bought in 1959 to work on my 57 Cheby. ( yeah, a 2DBAHTPP3SPDOD). Had all the plugs out again, redoing the valves. When each one came up to TDC I took a little sample off the top of each piston. Oily, with some grit in it. (carbon) So at a minimum it should get rings. Then I'd see the valves and do the head, then I'd check the mains, and I'd be in 1000 easy. But I've rebuilt two engines in the past two years and I know the costs. I'm hoping to leave this one in working clothes and use it for haying. That H with 4000 in parts and pro body work paint is just a hangar queen. And the SMTA will probably join it. My Grandkids will make a killing at the auction .

This is splitting hairs, but your Operator's manual and the serial plate will tell you that the max idle speed is approx 1815 rpm (exact wording from the manual). I&T is close enough, but I don't know where they get their information. They say the C/Super C is 1875, IH says 1815 also.

Unfortunately the serial plate is all but gone. Can just read the 29093J and that's it. Up in the left hand top corner I can see two numbers, 15

My tags have the rpm in the lower left corner.

What should be printed on the top line? The Model? I want to order a new tag from OEM

Yes the model is on the top line. I think OEM has a catalog online with pictures -- It won't be the latest one, but that doesn't matter. Be advised that OEM's tags are ok, but they are not high quality, they scratch easily in shipping, and the one for my Super H did not fit the existing holes exactly. Next time I'm going to get a former IH Hinsdale test engineer, Dr. Robert J. Diener in WV to do mine -- 304-599-4027. He has an ad in Red Power Magazine.
