This thing is driving me nuts. I've never encountered the problems I am seeing here.
Now it's the idle. I rebuilt the carb, with the complete kit. Runs strong, powers up no smoke, no leaks, but....it won't idle down to low idle. Double checked the idle stop screw, now have it way off, almost no friction. Can't get idle down by prying on the governor lever. Governor works as it should driving/pulling. Can this be a weak return spring? Does the spring in the governor pull the throttle closed or open it up? How do I look see where the throttle plate is at low idle with the whole thing, governor and carb connected? I'm tired of doing wheelies starting from the barn!

I just rebuilt the carb on my H and had the same problem. My linkage in the governor that controls the carb butterfly got wedged downward. I had to take the breather tube off of the gov and free it up. It works great now.

Lots of things here for me to try tomorrow. I can tell you the idle metering is OK. I tried it in and out and found the 'best' speed which was only faster! Need to know more about the binding. When I installed the carb, i could place the finger from the gov, in the right spot by pulling up on the tube. Only way I could align them. Need to know about adjusting governor to match carb. I also read in the archives about the throttle plate can be 'not closing due to very minor side play adjustment. Will check that, and also see if it is in there upside down. Half the fun of doing thes old machines is the diagnosing right? If it was easy we'd be playing checkers instead? Thanks to all for the help. Let you know tomorrow. It's start to rain! It would sure help the two fields of alfalfa we just put in. Dust like crazy behind that Brillion drill/cultipacker!

If you removed the throttle shaft did you get the throttle plate positioned correctly in the carburator throat when you tightened the screws?

If not the plate will not close correctly to allow the engine to idle slow

Gordo, You may already know this, but the idle mixture valve on that carb works the opposite of the way some idle mixture valves work. The idle mixture screw adjusts the amount of air, not the amount of fuel. I could never get mine to idle down until I finally read the manual and found that out. Roger

Gordo - A few possibilities:

1 (most likely) - When you stuck the carb back on you didn't get the tang at the carb end of the governor throttle shaft properly engaged in the mating slot on the carb throttle shaft.

2 - The governor to throttle tube is binding. Loosen both screws at both ends of the tube a couple turns. Wiggle the tube around then retighten the screws at the carb end. Then apply upward pressure with one hand to the front end of the tube while tightening the other two screws.

3 - Somehow the governor throttle shaft bellcrank got out of adjustment. The bellcrank is under the sloped cover at the top of the governor. Adjustment is relatively straightforward - post back if you need instructions.

----

If the tractor idled down OK before you rebuilt the carb, a weak spring inside the governor is not causing your problem. The gov spring is what OPENS the throttle - a weak spring will tend make the engine run slow.

Did you replace the idle metering jet inside the carb.

After you rebuilt the carb did you then reset the gov. to match the carb?? If you didn't that could well be your problem.
