What's the best way to check if your voltage regulator is working? I just re-wired my tractor exactly how it was when I got it. It looked like the wiring was original factor. When the engine is not running I have 6.2 VDC at the battery. When it is running I have 6.8 VDC at the battery. The ammeter is showing about 3 amps of charge running and 2 amps discharge not running. I can tell if the switch is working or not. Also, when I disconnect the the battery lead on from the VR I get constantly climbing amps before my meter shows infinity. I think it is working but I would like to know for sure. Any help would be great.

The ammeter stays at -2 with the engine off and the battery disconnected. How does that charging switch work? I thought it was just a lights switch. I'll try what you guys said and see how it works. Thanks guys.

2 amps of discharge not running????? ?

You mean when you shut the tractor off the ammeter registers - 2 amps. If the VR"s Cutout Relay was sticking closed I would suspect that to be wayyyyy yyy higher (like maybe - 20 amps) so I question the ammeters accuracy for now. If you were to remove a batery cable would it still show - 2 amps or go to 0 ????? ?? If it goes to 0 there must be a minor short somewhere explaining the lower charge of only 3 amps and the 2 amp discharge.

You ask how to tell if the VR is working.... When running dead ground the gennys field post n see how many amps she charges then !!!!! If that makes it charge at more like 10 amps right after a start up, I suspect a VR problem or maybe the VR isnt well grounded TRY A GOOD GROUND JUMPER WIRE TO THE VR"S CASE N SEE WHAT HAPPENS

I agree with Bob n Hal, 6.8 volts and 3 amps is too low right after a start up. Make sure the belt is good n tight and try a better ground on the VR (and genny also) and then try to dead ground the gennys field post n see how much she charges then. Also see if the ammetr stays at - 2 amps with no battery connection.

6.8 volts and 3 amps charging is probably insufficient to keep the battery charged. Like Hal says you should see 7.0 - 7.5 amps with the engine running at governed RPM.

Also the ammeter should indicate about 15 amps of charge immediately after starting then taper off about 5 amps as the battery fills up. (This assumes you have a voltage regulator. If it instead has cutout and 4-position charge control switch the ammeter should show about 15 amps continuously with the switch set at "H" and the engine running at speed)

Your last statement puzzles me a bit. Do you mean your VOLTMETER shows rising voltage when you pull the battery lead off?

The last question you asked; the answer is no. I disconnected the battery lead from the VR and hooked up a digital multimeter. The multimeter had constantly rising amps and then went out of range. I guess I should have been more specific; sorry about that.

When you are getting 6.8 volts at the battery that isn't too bad. We would like to see around 7 to 7.25, but as long as the battery has enough charge to start your tractor I wouldn't worry about it. Do you have a high and low charging
switch? Some of these tractors had this feature where you could increase or decrease the charging rate. Hal
