I really like IH tractor's alot, But all i hear is rear end's and trannie's going out, and some clutche's too on the 1686's and stuff like that?
Id have , or collect them if i knew they were reliable or halfway decent, on part's, or working on them,
Out of alot of tractor's out there, I still come back to Red Power, Im tired of hearing about this, or that 1466, or 1486 going out, or the rear end going bad,or just abuse,
I mean, sheesh, If i had my way, Id have a 1466, no cab, a 1486, a 660,a 22-36,a w-40, a TD-40,
and assorted old plow's, or drill's from IHC,
Hooray for the IH symbol In Red and Black!

I have only owned one IH tractor..

It doesnt matter if its an AC, MF, IH, JD, FNH, These tractors are 30 to 60 years old. The rear end going out could be the result of bearing failure or whatnot. A bearing going out after 50 years is not unheard of (compared to these new permeantly lubricated bearings like in motors, haha, what a joke). On machines this old, u have to expect some sort of breakdown eventually. Sure certain ones have had their issues, but at least by now it is WELL known and can be talked about and addressed and looked at before buying. All the other brands have had issues as well.

My reasoning for disliking JD are not for quality per say. sure their new stuff is probably as junky as the new nH, and whatnot, but that is the way of the world now, cheap planned obselescence (SP?). I dont like JD because a flipping JD baseball cap is 17$ There parts are outrageously priced and everyone who likes deere wouldnt even consider anything else and they think their deere is the best even if it's not. They tend to be arrogant, at least the ones I know.

If you are concerned about a certain models weaknesses, ask and these guys outta be able to give you some ideas, fixes, reassurances. I'm sure if you were looking at old deeres and asked over in the deere forum, they'd say, "Problems?, Not with a deere!!" HAHA

Kirk it sounds to me like you get a lot of info from John Deere guys. Most of them never have anything good to say about any other tractors. On top of that they may not have ever used one. I can tell you from a lifetime of using IH and some others including JD,AC,MF,Caseand Ford that you can not beat a IH for durability. Just look around there are 10s of thousands of them still hard at work. Including old letter series Farmalls. IH sold 6 or 7 million tractors for some reason. IH designs and innovations are still being used on new tractors today of lots of different brands.

IH guys that are always running down their own tractors? All the IH guys that I have ever known think they have an indestructable machine. This includes me. I take reasonable care of my tractors and implements and very seldom have any trouble with them. If I thought they were junk I would go to something else. Some are 60 years old and work on a regular basis. I think with reasonable care they will last another 60. I don't have a big IH right now, but have had in the past and got good service from them. It is a little different than the larger 66 series, but I have a 666 with the original TA that still works that is as good a tractor as there is in the country around here. In 7000 hrs it has never been down with anything except a broken shaft in the piggy back hydraulic pump. It starts easy and runs the best. I have two 84 series tractors that dad bought new and one has over 7000 and the other a little over 5000 on it and neither has ever been down. We pull them hard with implement that folks say are to big for them, and yet they keep on going.

AMEN TO THAT! The 66 series are some of the best, solidest, strongest, durable, reliable tractors ever made by ANY manufacturer! Ever hear a turbo spool up on one of them D414'S? That's raw American diesel power! Plain and simple. You can pull them motors done to a couple hundred RPM's and they'll hang in there!

The reason you hear about this or that going out ALL THE TIME, is because these tractors are STILL BEING USED EVERY DAY ON FARMS.

If the fact that these machines have withstood the test of time to the point where they are simply wearing out is a testament to the quality of the machine, not an inherent problem with the machine.

Hi Kirk,

Of course you are going to find Red fans on this list so take the opinions for what their worth. I've got a neighbor that drives green and loves 'em. Grandad was a mechanic and he hated working on anything that wasn't red or orange.

My take on things? I like whatever is running and can work the field.

Mike

All brands of tractors will give trouble if they are abused and not cared for, and those same tractors, if used properly and well maintained will very rarely ever cause any grief. The classic and antique tractors that we are buying and restoring today are the same tractors that were respected and well maintained by the previous owners. The tractors that were ignored and abused have already gone to China.
