MJH 4C301 It crapped out again. I've replaced the plugs, the plug wires, cleaned and gapped the points, Swapped out the condenser, everything short of tearing it down completely, and still no spark.

The electrodes in the cap are SERIOUSLY eroded. Does anyone have a source for a cap? I found a rotor and coil online, but no cap. I'll worry about the magnet when I get that far.

Standard Magneto has a new cap, cost is almost $99.00. That's their phone number I posted. Hal

I wouldn't tear it down. You can check the magnetism of the magnets by removing the cap over the coil and removing the coil to the side. Don't disconnect any of the wires. Take a flatblade screwdriver and touch those magnets they should attract that screwdriver with some effort. Here's a picture of a mag with the magnets exposed. The pen is pointing to one of the magnets. Hal

Without removing the rotor and gear, condenser, points and "Breaker Bracket". So it's a tear down to ger close enough to check the magnets. And look at all them itty bitty pieces to get lost!

That's one heck of a lot of parts to keep track of. Have you tried cranking over the engine with
the cap off the mag to make sure the rotor is turning? Hal

Yep. Had my daughter crank while I watched. Not very entertaiing.

I was plowing snow last Wednesday after our last blizzard (18", and no electricity for 30 hours). Worked about an hour. Made the last push out of the drive and dropped the front wheels into the ditch. Not real deep, but enough packed snow and ice under the rear wheels to keep me from getting out. Got a shovel and dug out for the front wheels and under the rear as best I could.

The tractor didn't want to start, but eventually started sorta cylinder by cylinder. But when I applied load it just lost RPM's, no power. It would rev up without load, but lose power and RPM when I let the clutch out.

So I got the truck and SWMBO to drag it back to the house. (Have you ever backed an M at 10 miles an hour? SWMBO thought she might not make it up the drive if she went slow!)

The M burns some oil and runs a little rich, so usually that means it's time to clean and gap the plugs, which I did. No start at all, not even a pop. Checked for spark, none. Replaced the plugs, wires, and cleaned and gapped the points, put in a good condenser. No spark.

Did it all again, and still no luck.

Pull No1 sparkplug near the radiator and hold your thumb over the plug hole until you feel compression while someone hand cranks the engine. Slowly keep cranking the engine until the notch on the damper pulley is aligned with the pointer. Pull the mag cover and see where your rotor is pointing. It should be at the No1 plug tower. If it is way off something has jumped time. Hal
