Agree with others. Any engine this big requires a hefty pull to turn over. Cranking IS dangerous if you don't "follow the rules": make sure the ignition is timed right, make sure the impulse coupling is working right, and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER..... push down or spin. IF the engine kicks will you're pushing down, IT will almost-certainly break your arm or hand. Never happened to me--I was chicken and ALWAYS pulled up--but my father had his arm broken spinning a Ford T. Forgot to retard the spark.

Get the charging system operating properly, or convert to 12 V (either in the generator or go to an alternator). You will regret it otherwise, after the novelty of the mag has worn off... especially if the tractor isn't dead instant to start or is cold blooded and you live in a climate where it can get cold...

Speaking of dangerous hand cranks... my little 38 / 39 styled JD L took me for a ride around the crank handle when i was about 14... didn't break anything but my pride, just a few cuts and bruises after it bounced me off of the gravel in the driveway... It's a real bummer when they try to run backward on ya...

Beleive me a hand crank will get very very old very fast. Plus if all is not right it can or will brake you hand/arm or other things. BTDT. Plus for the cost of a mag you could swithc it to 12 volts or fix your 6 volt system so it makes more since to fix it right in the first place. A good mag will cost you around $200 and you can switch it over to 12 volts for around $100 or less

A magneto is good when it works. If you can, park it on "battery hill", any slope that'll get her rolling.

It isn't all that hard to crank, after you get the hang of it. Crank slowly until you feel the compression come up, then pull up clockwise from around the 8 or 9 o'clock position. If she's tuned halfway decent, it should start up in a crank or two.

we have a 49 m with a mag, we still converted it from 6 volt to 12 volt. all we did was put in a 12 volt battery,a one wire alternater and changed the light bulbs to 12 volt, that was 10 years ago. no problems with starter. starts great, even below zero. you don't want to hand crank a M, not fun

Why not simply get your current charging system working right? First time you get bit by the crank youll wish you did. how do I know, I spent 6 weeks with a cast on my wrist trying to handcrank an M.

I grew up when men were used to hard work and not many wanted to hand crank M on regular basis. Everyone I knew kept battery and starter up even though money was really hard to come by.

Crank M for Murder... in reply to Andy Motteberg, 05-02-2007 16:38:29
Hitchcock got it wrong.

In addition to being dangerous, cranking a large engine such as that on an M is very strenuous exercise.

In fact, if you watch a lot of film comedies from the 'twenties and 'thirties, you can identify a rather common comic type: the big, powerful liveried chauffeuer who is just about to pound the daylights out of W. C. Fields, Laurel and/or Hardy, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Harry Langdon ("Harry Langdon?"), etc., when he is at the last moment restrained by the mild-mannered little old lady who employs him.

The reason this joke was played so often is that chauffeurs had to be BIG to crank that Locomobile, Peerless, Packard, Biddle, Rolls Royce, Pierce Arrow, etc., etc., in the event the battery ran down.

Now, the engine in an M is nowhere near as big as the one in an Hispano-Suiza; but it is big enough to be VERY difficult to turn over, especially if the compression is good.

Bohemian, I don't have any idea what you are talking about. You did not answer his question, you must have hit the reply next to mine by accident.
