Battle of the Gas Filter Gasket

Perhaps everyone has run into this before: Removed the tank on my Super C to clear the fuel line & put everything back together, but can"t stop fuel from leaking from where the top of the glass bowl fits into the metal holder. Bought a new gasket and filter screen, still leaks. The prior owner had two gaskets in there, sandwiching the filter, so I tried that. It helped, but still leaks a pretty steady drip. Hmmmm. Doesn"t feel like the gasket is pinched, when I tighten the knob at the bottom of the swingarm that holds the glass sediment bowl. Drip stops when I turn the shut-off knob. Any ideas, or is this pretty much a feel-as-you-go project? Many thanks.

A simple thing to try would be to twist the glass bowl in same direction as nut rotates just as nut makes contact with bowl until tight. I also do this with canister oil @ fuel filters as it is the only I can them from leaking. Also you should only hand tighten the glass bowls. Armand

Are you sure you have the correct gasket as there is another size just smaller to not work. Shut gas off remove the glass bulb then look very careful at the top of the sediment bowl assy check to see that it is not sprung as people used a pliers then warped the metal so a gasket cannot seal. I get mine from NAPA screen and gasket are only a dollar each take your glass bowl along to see that you get the correct size.

You might soak the gaskets in gas.....thus letting the entire surface slightly swell..... then reasemble.....

Thanks again, guys. This was a simple issue, but I wanted to check before grabbing a bigger set of pliers and really wrenching down on the thing. Hopefully I won't cause a bigger problem for myself.

I have two that have the same trouble. I use two gaskets and they don't leak any.

Are you useing the rubber gasket or the cork type?? If its the cork type drop in it a little gas for a few minutes then install it. The gas makes it swell a little bit and soften it some. Most if they are cork will self seal after a coulple hours when they leak like that. BTDT and it can get to a guy fast when they don't seal

If the body of the seat for the glass is warped from overtightening, it is not going to seal well. Bending it to flat may break it (potmetal) sometimes a square cut BunaN synthetic rubber gasket (from a good parts store) will make them seal when warped. New replacement are available (less than 30$. JimN

Pot Metal? in reply to Janicholson, 05-02-2007 09:02:29
I find it important to press the glass FIRMLY in place first, tighten until resistance is felt, and then WIGGLE the nut/swing arm ever so slightly as I bear down on it.

I've never had to use pliers; but I hasten to add I'm sure it doesn't matter whether you do or not as long as you don't overtourque.

I am appalled from Jim to learn this assembly is pot metal and I intend to treat it VERY carefully in the future!

Thanks for the warning, Jim. This kind of information is nice to have.

I had the same problem with my H. I finally went to the CIH dealer and bought a new glass bowl. The old glass was flat on top where it seals, and the new replacement had a lip on the inside for the filter to fit in. The new plastic filters must be thicker than the old brass ones. ken
