6 volt cutoff verses regulator cub

i have a cub with 6 volt cutoff i went to napa and bought a regulator vr850 not knowing i needed a cutoff instead the number for napa's cutoff is vr850sp i asked what was the difference and napa said nothing. so i installed the regulaor useing only two wires to it. the generator wire and battery wire the cub is charging now will this work this way or am i messing up?

JAW, Sure it will work any you probably wont mess things up, unless its left on high charge constantly at high RPM with no lighting loads etc. in which case you could overcharge the battery. It works since its internal Cutout Relay (one portion of a full fledged Voltage regulator) will work and you can stilllll use the light switch as the Low/High Charge manual regulation buttttt ttttt to prevent possible overcharge and to do a much better job of automatic regulation versus the old fashioned manual WHY NOT USE ALL THE FEATURES OF THE NEWER VOLTAGE REGULATOR since its already purchased n installed????? ? Heres how to wire it regardless if a 3 or 4 terminal:

Its possible to convert from the relay to a VR.

BAT on VR to load (NOT batery/starter) side of ammeter ARM/GEN on VR to gennys ARM post

FLD on VR to Gennys Field post. On a Cutout Relay system the gennys field used to wire to the light switch. Dont use that circuit, simply remove it and instead wire the gennys Field now to the FLD terminal on the VR.

(L)OAD terminal if its a 4 terminal VR (BAT FLD LOAD ARM) versus only a 3 (BAT ARM FLD) the 4th L terminal supplies hot batery voltage up to the Lights and Ignition (their BAT input terminals) which used to be fed off the ammeters Load terminal (same terminal that wires down to BAT on a VR or relay). If you have a 4 terminal VR with the extra 4 th L terminal, remove the wiring from the load side of the ammeter to lights and/or ignition switches BAT input terminal(s) and instead feed voltage up to the L BAT input terminal(s) from the VR's L terminal

POLARIZE the genny of course, and if its a 3 brush adjustable 3rd brush genny n youre converting over to a full fledged VR, I would set the 3rd adjustable brush to a high charge rate.

NOTE on many 4 terminal VR's the terminal off to one side or the bottom all by itself is the ARM terminal while teh 3 side by side are BAT FLD LOAD. if its only a 3 terminal VR the terminals are BAR ARM FLD

The VR needs a good ground remember.

john t thanks for the help but im still cofused at the point to conect the fourth terminal im just not good with electrical stuff any more info for a dummy like me

Not to worry mate, you will do fineeeee eee. The MAIN THING now is ifffff fffff you have a 4 terminal VR it should have 3 side by side labeled something like BAT FLD LOAD while off on one side all by itself or the bottom is the ARM terminal. If you ONLY have 3 terminals they would be BAT ARM FLD and theres no dern L terminal to worry with yayyyyy yyy.

If hooking to the LOAD L terminal on a 4 terminal VR (if thats what you have???) causes you too much heartburn SIMPLY IGNORE N DONT EVEN USE IT. The lights n ignition will still work fine if left on the Load side of the ammeter NO PROBLEM. JUST BE SURE N STILL HOOK THE VR

BAT to ammeters load side FLD to gennys Field post ARM/GEN to gennys Arm post

Heck as Bob n I told ya it will still work if you only use the Cutout Relay portion of that VR with BAT to ammeter and GEN/ARM to gennys Arm post and the gennys Field post left wired up to the light switch buttttt ttttt theres a slim chance of overcharging ifffff ffff you left it on high charge alllll the time and ran for hours n hours at fast RPM with no lights

If in doubt DO NUTTIN LOL

thanks john for the info i have 4 terminal regulator if i dont use the 4th terminal what do you do with the wire you took off the field terminal on the generator just tape it up and dont use it?

The term is "CUTOUT", and, yes, a voltage regulator will function as a "cutout" if it's "Field" terminal is left unused, and the "GEN" (ARM) and "BATT" terminals are connected as a cutout would be.
