I respectfully disagree with Gordo Below. Brakes can squeel like a banshee when new, worn, half worn, or because of change of weather. Polished surfaces on metal, and glaze on friction material will do it. From buses to farmalls, from disk, to band brakes, they all can make hideous noise. Brake squeal liquid applied as directed can limit some extreme cases (not disk brakes on a SH or other internal expanding twin disk setup, there is no location for the material to absorb viabration). Sanding the surfaces with 240 grit Silicon carbide in random directions, and deglazing the friction material can help for a while, but not always, and not forever. I would like someone to try the elastic goo in the inside of a regular IH drum brake , and on the outside of the band to see if they could be quieted down. Good luck, they do make irritating noise. The squeal in a brake system come from metal against metal, No squeal ever comes from the lining on metal. Unles there is some foreigh object imbedded or lodged in there. Look for shiny metal spot somewhere.

Make sure the drum or lining surface is clean, no rust, dirt, etc. Be sure the surface is not worn or rough. Andy.
