I want to repower an H farmall with a diesel. I would like to know what if any diesel engine is a somewhat easy repower. I would like to put a mack b-61 diesel in iy but I think it would be too much labor. Any ideas on any engines even if it would be a gasoline engine? Thanks

How much work do you want to do? How about as easy as bolting it right in?? 6 cyl power, gas or diesil. IH 6 cyl combine engines are a perfect canidate for an engine swap. C-221-C301 gassers, 282D will bolt up. To make it easy on ya,, if you unbolt a Farmall 460row crop from the engine plate forwards,,(front end included) remove the H engine, and slide the 460 front end right on to the H, all the bolt holes line up. Now what you have to do is,, put the H starter ring on the 460 flywheel,, anybody with a big lathe can do this,, use the H pilot bearing inplace of the 460,,, then you get you a Super H clutch disk and keep your 460 clutch. After all that,, it will start with the stock H starter, 6 cyl power and quite an attention getter if you stretch ou the H hood to fit over it. Call it a H6?? I turned my conversion into a look alike 460, you can make the 460 sheet metal work too. Just have to do some measuring, and planning. The front hood, grille, radiator is a bolt on deal in this swap, so you dont have to do a thing if you happen to find a junker 460 somewhere, and a IH combine out of service and has a good motor in it. After I put the H starter ring on the 460 flywheel, it was a matter of putting it all together, and that dont take long, but its the only BOLT IN conversion I know of and still be 100% IH. If you need more info, I have lots n lots of photos I can email you. ChadS

I always thought I'd call that swap an "H-06"...since the engine setup would be the same as a 606, 706, or 806.

If I had to do it again, it would have H or M sheet metal on it, and a diesil with,,, with a slightly larger than stock turbo. Chad

I left ya a reply in the latest post. 560 parts instead of 460. Need to find out if 560 had 2 different flywheels. Reason is,, when they started building the 06 tractors, they may have used the same as the late 560,, then changed later as well. Chad

The only "easy" repower will be another H, Super H, 300, or 350 GASOLINE engine. Anything else will require just as much labor as the Mack B-61 repower.

Don't bother with the Continental Diesel out of a 350. No parts available.

Nat parts are available for the D 193 Continental. My IH dealor can get everything except for the valves. I purchased a complete overhaul kit from him. It is a little high at 1700 dollars.

I have zero experience with the 350D, but I always heard that the Continental diesel in that application "ain't worth a Continental."

As I said, I have no experience with that engine to back it up.

That comes from folks that don't know anything about them. The one I have was bought new by a friend and has been a great tractor for him and me. I have used it almost 20 years and have had no more problems with it than any other. It has lots of power and the best fuel economy of any tractor I have now or have ever had. It starts fairly well in cold weather and runs like a champ. Parts are quite high for it, but in 20 years I have put on one water pump and rebuilt the engine once. I have 14 old Farmalls and it is ever bit as good as any I have.
