Plow capability for Super A

I've got yet another question about the ability of my 48 SA. I know that they were sold with a single bottom plow. Does anyone know what size this plow was? My SA has an aftermarket 3 point, does anyone know how it would do with a single bottom 3 point plow? My concern is that the 3 point hooks much higher on the tractor than the original plow, which attached to the draw bar. Any ideas?

Todd: As some of the others told you Super A tractors could be equipped with single bottom 14" or 16" and 2 bottom 12". Mind you that is with Super A plow. You haven't said what your 3 point hitch is, however I'll guarentee you if it's Worksaver, your not going to pull any plow right. The Worksaver lower links hook directly to final drives making them almost parallel. You can't turn, even make the slightest steering corrections with any ground working tools in the ground. You look at any factory 3 point hitch, lower links attach to tractor 30% closer than at implement.

If you fabricate a spacer, making lower link hook up in 4" on each side it will work. I've playing with these for awhile now, have it plowing quite well, but I still can't pull as much plow with 3 point as I can with one point fast hitch. One point works on same principle as SA factory plow.

If you wish send me an e mail, I have a few photos.

Thanks everybody. Hugh, I don't know what brand my 3 point is, but I know that it bolts to the final drives, I think it uses the studs that the drawbar would use (if I had one). My concern was that the 3 point would cause the plow to be pulling too high on the tract, maybe causing it to flip? Any other thoughts? By the way, any of you guys out there find a Super A plow for $15 let me know, up here they run $150+.

Todd: On the side of this post where it says, send e mail, click on that and send me an e mail. I'll show you how to make that hitch perform right for a 3 point plow. You not going to find a plow that is any good for $15. Even if you do, it will require a complete set of wear parts and those will cost $150. The $15. plows are the ones with worn out wear parts and $15. is scrap price for what is left.

If your in clay, you'll be best off with a single bottom 14" or 16" cut. If you go Super A factory plow, then you need a drawbar.

We had a "plow day" last Saturday and a guy drove over with a Super A but didn't own a plow; he just wanted to watch the other tractors. Another fellow had a Johnny Cash AC WC and pulled a 1-16" Little Genius. They hooked the SA to the 1-16 and the SA did real well with it.
It helped that the soil was rather sandy. One guy had an AC D14 with a 3 bottom...too much as it spun out very often. I pulled my 2-16" with my H(2&3rd gear), a 300 pulled a 3 bottom JD trail type. We had 4 AC, 2 Farmalls and one JD 630 there....just the right ratio of JD! Hopefully we will have more old iron next year. At one point I counted 14 cars stopped along the road...a lot of young parents with small kids. Three little boys took off their shoes and ran around in the plowed dirt and had great fun; nice sight to see.

Hugh that 15 dollar plow I bought looked like a new one. I bought it for that reason. I used the plow chief parts on my C plows. There are scores of them here that nobody uses anymore. Yes lots of them have gone to scrap. I have also bought old McCormick mowing machines for as little as 5 dollars. I buy all the cheap ones I run across for the parts. There was a lot more of those sold here in tobacco country than anywhere else is why they are cheap here. I know a guy that buys this stuff and ships it north to MI,MINN, and makes a ton of money on them.

My Uncle has a Super A with front (mid) & rear hyd. He has a 2 x 12 plow that has a long bar that goes up under the tractror to the front (mid) hyd bar and attaches. He use to use it top plow his little garden. He usually just left the cultivators on the Super A and did the garden with his 3000 Ford.

There were 14 and 16 inch plows for the Super A. I have a set of 2x12 inch plows that were also built for the Super A. In most case with weight it will handle the 2 12s. With the 3 point hitch you will not have any draft control over the plow. I would guess it will need a depth wheel attached to the plow. There are lots of Super A implements around, so I really don't understand why one would put a 3 point hitch on one, but thats me. Around here you can buy a one bottom Super A plow for 10 or 15 dollars at auctions. If one started with a Super A without the 3 point, he could find all the equipment for it. The best place to look for Super A attachments is in the tobacco belt. Ky,NC,SC,GA,TN,VA and so on. There is lots of it around in these states.

Hugh Mackay probably knows the answer to your questions. I would think the Super A would have
the 16-inch moldboard plow similar to the plow used on the Farmall A. There may have a been a 2 bottom plow too. Hal
