I am looking into putting a starter on my dads '42 H. After looking through the archives, it's clear that the H came with a C152 engine. The problem I am running into is that the starters I have come across for this model all say that they are for H's built between 1940-1952 with a C163 gas engine. Will this starter work on his H?

Yes all the starters for the Hs are alike. as long as it is a two bolt starter it will work. The C163 is a C164 it was only in the Super H. All other Hs had the 152 in them. You use to be able to get those starters at TSC. I would bet they are available here on this site as well. Any starter from an A,B,C or M will also work on your tractor.

Just a side note here. A starter off an A,or B will not have the torque that one made for an H or M will have but will still work ok if you don't push it to much. I know because I have one from a B on one of my Hs but as I said there not as srtong as the one made for the Hs

A starter for an M has a center bearing that was not originally used on an H. If the starter has ever been rebuilt it will probably have the center bearing added, although there were some drive end frames that were not machined to use the bearing.
