I have tried everything, but, I am no mechanic, just a points and plugs dude. I have changed the points and plugs, set the points according to the book, changed condenser, new plug wire's. I have the dist. loose, and as I crank I turn the dist just a little. I can get it to start and idle pretty good, but when I give it more gas it just cuts out, and sometimes dies. Oh, and I took off the carb and cleaned it out good. I didn't buy a rebuild kit yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you tightening the distributor back down a little before trying to give it more gas? If not that may be moving on you as you apply more throttle.

I don't think its anything to do with wires etc. There are two jets in the carb idle jet and main jet, It runs good on the idle but won't run on the main. Id say the main jet is plugged/needle buggered up or bent, rubber seal flaked and plugging it, etc. Thats where I would look first. Also, a bad gasket will eliminate the vacuum. Not likely but worth keeping an eye out for. Clean the carb with a good soaking carb cleaner then blow out the lines or try a pipe cleaner. You many need a kit.

ahh gary is probly on the right track. I had a simalar problem when I put my 300u under a load, it acted like it was running out of gas. Originally it did this and I didnt have the gas shutoff open enough, but it still did it but not as bad. I turned out the main jet about 1/4 turn and she runs fine now!!

all of these guys advice is great. If you still have problems, I would check timing and adjust accordingly. Old is right on, these tractors use solid copper plug wires with no resistance unlike auto wires. you can buy a universal set at tractor supply, altho the terminations are a bit hobbled, but thats how they are universal. They are a bit stiff too, but probably cheaper then the dealers, and they work fine

First off did you use the right type of plug wires when you replaced them. They need to be true copper wire plug wires not the ones made for cars. Then pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas for at least 5 minutes, catch the gas as it comes out for 2 reasons. 1 is to save it to use, 2 so you can look to make sure its clean and not full of rust etc. If you don't have a good flow there pull the fuel line off at the carb and check flow there. If good then its in the carb if not good its in the line, sediment bolt or tank.

When you cleaned your carburetor, did you adjust it afterwards? Be sure your fuel tank, fuel line, fuel filter and sediment bowl are clean as well. Also be sure your air cleaner is clean.

Have you check for good gas flow from the tank? A little chunk of rust or crud can give you fits.
