I am swapping the gears from a 70S era cub transmission into my 48. I have it all torn down but cant get main drive line out. There is a 1 1/8 inch nut at front of trans on main spindle It looks like I should just take this loose and slide the main shafr out.The problem is it has been "struck" so as to lock it in place with a little tab. Is this the case or has mine been damaged? Or am i on the wrong track all together? Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

If you remove the front seal / bearing retainer on the front of the tranny case, the shaft will pull out. Don't recall any large nut.

Oops! I'll bet you're talking about the countershaft aren't you? Once you remove the nut, the shaft will pull out the rear of the case. Watch the shims count.

yes it is the countershaft. the nut will not move because it has been stamped or struck with a chisel or somthing and the little groove is wedged into the splines on the shaft. it looks like it was done at the factory because it is very clean but it could be damage or a bad attemptat a repair at somepoint. any chance it is reverse threaded? thanx

move the shifting forks so that it is in 2 gears at the same time and then you will be able to crank down on it.
