IH 6788 trans grinding

I have been borrowing a nice 6788 2+2 from a neighbor and would like to fix several things before I return it as a thank you. Most of the problems are basic fixes of hydraulic leaks and gauges, however the transmission range shifter tends to grind when putting in gear. If the shifter does go in easily, it will pop out as soon as the clutch is disengaged. It acts like a truck when the clutch brake is slipping. Does a 6788 have a clutch brake? If so, can it be adjusted easily? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 1969 1256 that did the same thing, well here's what I did I drained the transmission fluid out of it re-installed the gears and put new transmission fluid in it and it shifted perfectly. I'm not quite sure what your 6788 is doing but thought this would help

The 2+2 aka aligator series has a electo hyd trans brake that is activated 2 ways. First the trans range shifter has a switch a bottom of qaudrant that is activated when in neutral and the brake is activated when the clutch pedal is depressed aginst firewall depressing a switch. These units have very little or no grind if set corectly. Range poping out is due to worn arm on range cover (external) and if you look it will probably be loose on shaft. If range cover is to be removed there is a drop box on side of range trans. IH made a special tool to remove cover without taking this off and any older shop would have this.

I've never worked on one of those, but if I remember right, the transmission brake was hydraulic applied and controled by a electric solenoid. The brake itself is probably very similar if not identical to the one used in the 3088 series two wheel drives. I know that the parts on those are very expensive compared to the style used on the 06-86 series, but are much more reliable. Keep in mind that the range transmission is a collar shift and it is impossible to shift without grinding unless the tractor is at a dead stop, the engine is at low idle, and the clutch has been disengaged for at least three seconds. If it still grinds once these conditions have been met, then you go looking for a trans brake problem. On the popping out of gear problem, thats a classic case of failed detent parts underneath the range trans cover. If these 2+2's are anything like the two wheel drive 86 and 88 series, it wouln't be a walk in the park to repair. Cab floor and seat need to be removed, unhook shift linkages, drain a few gallons of oil and remove the cover from the left side of the range trans, block the park lock assembley in the unlocked (up) position, remove the range trans cover while a helper works through the removed cover on the left side and catches the reverse shift fork and makes sure it's woodruff key does not get lost.

Yes it does have a transmission brake but you have to go thru setting the clutch free travel then the trans brake then the dump valve . Off the top of my head i can not remember the free travel on that tractor and i can not even get into my books as they are in my Ranger and it is setting broke down out at a buddys farm . As far as the jumping out of gear this sounds like the roller in the shift linkage has broken and this part is down under the range shifter cover not easy to get to ya have to darn near stand on your head and work thru the floor plate in the cab also having the range cover removal tool is a BIG help . even after ya get everything set correctly the gears do not stop the moment ya shove the clutch down ya have to give it a couple seconds .

i dont know about you but If I lent my tractor to someone and they started wrenching on it I'd be a little ticked off. Maybe I'm just over protective, but I would consider asking the guy if It's alright if you fix a few things as a thank you instead of doing it without permission. I say this because some people like things done a certain way, like me, hehe.

It sure is a nice gesture and I'm not trying to discourage you by any means. Obviously he trusts you enough to loan it to you.

Ya just might as well send them over as with all this rain i can not go and get the last two sheets of drywall and i can't dance and it is to wet to plow. All of our stuff is ready to rock and roll.
