Noisy Farmall Super A Transmission

My Farmall Super A transmission is noisy during operation in at least 1st,2nd and 3rd gears. I've never tried 4th. When going downhill, coasting in gear, the noise is greatly diminished. It is most noisy under load. I suspect some of the ball bearings are shot. Is this a job for a professional or can a shade tree like myself replace the bearings? I've worked on automobiles for years but never "split" a tractor.
Any info is welcome.
Thanks,
Bob

Most Farmalls I have been around make very little noise in those lower gears. Some do make a little more when in road gear, that is the nature of straght cut gears. I believe if it is making much noise at all in the lower gears especially while under a load it does have a problem with a bearing. I had a bad bearing start making the noise you described on my C several years ago while finishing side dressing tobacco. Only liking 2 acres being finished cultivating for the year I kept going. Needless to say I ruined some of the gears and turned a cheap fix into a expensive one.I would take a look inside that transmission if I were you, and I learned that the hard way.

I have split at least half dozen the last few years to replace the front seal and when i have found the front bearing with side play i have replaced them they only cost 20 bucks or so but it has been my experience that it sure made the tranny quieter but i use the 150wt tranny fluid also.

hey bob. If you know someone with a cellphone or a voice recorder that can be connected to the comoputer and uploaded, then you could post a wave file of the sound. the quality might not be the best, but it will help these guys figure out the sound for sure. I planned on doing that a while back with my hydraulic noise, but I've since figured it out. Since I got her all quieted down between the exhaust and hydraulics, ive noticed a little gear noise. If someone were to tell me they never have noise, i'd be concerned, but this is quiet whine like has been discussed as normal gear wear, so I'm going to leave it be.

Wow! I din't expect such a great response from you all! I really appreciate all of them.

Back to the noise..... I bush hog with the tractor, about 2 acres, and it is noisy enough that I wear foam earplugs. My ears tend to ring rather easily so I know this too is subjective. A friend of mine who used to operate Farmalls back in his youth, 50+ years ago, seems to think the noise MAY be excessive but not necessarily. Its been a long time since hes been on one. I realize noises are difficult to impossible to diagnose by email. Having never before operated a Farmall SA myself I cannot know what it should sound like. The noise is not a squeal. It sounds to me more like a 2 lb. coffee can with a half dozen ball bearings in it being moved in a circular motion causing the bearings to roll around the inside of the can. Not shaking but rolling. I know from the IT manual that the differential gears and the transmission gears are straight cut making them inherently more noisy than helical cut gears. I will get someone to listen to it before I go further with disassembly. If anyone can imagine the noise I describe, please take a crack at it.. Thanks again!

Nope. That"s not what I had in mind by normal gear noise.

Bob, These little Farmalls do make a fair amount of gear noise and that is normal. I've been around them since I was a kid and I have a certain expectation, based on years of experience, of what one should sound like. As long as it sounds "normal" to me, I don't even notice the noise.

The problem is I don't know how to describe the sound, or how loud that it is, and I can't hear your tractor over the internet.

I suggest that you find somebody locally who has some experience with Farmall A's, & B's and have them run it and listen to it. It would be a far more informed opinion than anything you can get here.

Bob: I stand by what I said, and my reasons, you might not realize it, but you gave an excellent description. Your problem could be the oil slinger gear or bearings. Either way the lower shaft must come out.

Get out my old broom stick idea, break down get your wife a new broom. Jack up tractor rear wheels, anchor drawbar to a tree or other vehicle, so it can't fall off jack. Start the tractor and let it run in gear. Cut off the old broom handle, place one end to your ear and the other end on various parts of tractor casting until you zero in on the noise. This will pinpoint within 4" of where the noise is coming from. Now, if you want to get sophisticated, auto parts stores do sell stethiscopes for this purpose.

A big screw driver with a solid handle grip will work for this also.

I see...I've used a section of fuel line or water hose to isolate sounds before...I'll try it.
Thanks!

Bob everone has good advice I just got done with my 51 SA last weak and did all the work myself. I put in a new clutch, front crank seal, valve job,did not need any lower work. runs great but back to the gears mine was real bad I split it at the trans and put all new bearings in it and it sounds great now. paid about $50 a bearing good luck

I help to maintain our town's tractor for cutting roadsides, which coincidentally, is an International 130. The first time I drove it, I thought for sure that the transmission was dying, and I told my dad that. He drove it around and told me that his father's B made the same noise the day they picked it up new from the dealer. Those transmissions seem quite a bit louder then the H/M transmissions. I am not sure if it is due to the position of the transmission relative to the operator, the amount of material between the operator and the gears, or just the way the gears were cut. I am betting it is probably just fine.

Bullgears! in reply to chadd, 04-26-2007 14:44:52
I always thought it was the bull gears in Model A that make them so noisy. Maybe I'm wrong and they don't have bull gears. But IIRC they do.

But my Super C makes a little gear noise, too. So did our MT, which was was only twenty years old at the time and which my granfather (a professional mechanic who rebuilt all kinds of equipment, including farm tractors) signed off on. That MT was sold to a family friend who, last I heard, was still using it and had no trouble with the rear end.

In fact, a Jeep or Scout in low transfer case will make lots of gear noise, too. So will my 1977 Bronco.

But my Ford 2600 makes NO gear noise. Nor did my father's little Ford garden tractor, which was a Japanese deal of some kind but was big enough to pull two-row equipment. I wonder they don't make gear noise?

Like others have said they are all noisy. I bought my A in mid sixtys and installed new belly mower. The first time I ran mower I was sick of the whole deal as the PTO had such a whine that I knew it could not last. Now 40 plus years later the tractor has cut 2 acre lawn for about 25 years and after that it was used to "bush hog" 5 acre pasture for about 10 years and PTO is doing fine in fact after a while I got to where I did not notice whine.

Am I MIssing Something? in reply to Bob McConkey, 04-26-2007 13:10:04
If I may ask, what do you all see in his description that rules out normal gear noise?

You are getting excellent advice here, Bob. Everyone is right about the need for a manual and your ability to do the job.

(Unfortunately, they are also right about the expense!)

But again, a low-pitched, rumbling whine that decreases in volume when going downhill or not under load, and increases in pitch as you speed up can be a NORMAL noise! It certainly seems to me that this is what you are describing.

On the other hand, high-pitched squealing, chattering, and loud, rhythmic clunking are BAD noises that need diagnosis.

PLEASE have someone with experience listen to the noise before you begin dismantling things!

A. Bohemian: You ask,"An I missing something." I must concur, you usually do. I am 65 years old and been around these Farmalls almost since birth. My dad bought his first one the year I was born.

I gave my advice to Bob, based on the excellent description he gave. And yes, offset Farmalls do have bull gears.

If you are familiar with general mechanical work you should be able to get thru this. Be careful to support the parts real well as you will be hammering and wiggling them pretty good before you are done. The guys here will get you thru any sticking points. Have your wallet ready as parts are not cheap. Dave.

Believe it or Not... in reply to Bob McConkey, 04-26-2007 13:10:04
...a certain amount of gear noise is normal with almost all tractors of this vintage.

If what you hear is a very low-pitched (NOT quiet - low pitched) whine, which gets higher in pitch as you go faster, it may be normal gear noise.

On the other hand, high-pitched squealing, chattering, and clunking are all BAD transaxle noises.

If you don't have much experience with old tractors, let someone who does listen to it. You may be pleasantly surprised by their opinion.

Bob: To remove the bottom shaft from a Super A transmission the entire rear end has to be split from the rest of the tractor just ahead of transmission, Cut yourself a couple of good wood wedges to wedge in pivot of front axle, that will secure the offset weight of engine.

Then remove wheels, followed by final drives and platform. PTO and differential may as well come out first to lighten the transmission case. It would be best to have either IT manual or IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual as there are some crucial settings when you put this all back together.

Thanks Hugh. I have the IT manual but it seems to assume a modicum of tractor experience. Should I just get the trans out and take it to the IH mechanic? The removal of the shafts concern me, especially the riveted reverse gear as well as the bearing removal and installation.
I can get the parts but not certain I can do all of the work.

Bob: Sounds to me as though you should go with what your comfortable with. Like you, I never mind separating these components, but I do like someone with everyday experience rebuilding the component. Lets face it your going to save yourself a lot on labor, removing the transmission. Not pleasant or exciting work, so you may as well have a professional deal with the gears, seals and bearings. That way you don't have to do the unexciting or unpleasant again next year.

I've been monitoring this site close to 8 years now. One of the items that amaze me is the number of the same folks rebuilding the same component every two years, components that run 40 years with a professional rebuild. I farmed for many years, when rebuild time came, we separated the components, shipped each component off to the best rebuilder we knew.

I don't know, some of these guys must like mucking around in grease. There is one guy on here, I swear he's had the TA out of his 300 5 times in 8 years. I had the TA out of my 300 once in 35 years, and that was when it was 5 years old.

Although I'm not sure Bob has a REAL problem (see my posts above about normal gear noise and old tractors), if it develops that he does have a problem, he would do well to consider shipping the removed transmission off to a rebuilder.

I, too, always farm out such work. It's not rocket science, but you rarely get the first one right. It takes experience, and experience is best accumulated on other's tractors! (Just kidding.)

And, I've noticed at least one thread on the Ford 8N boards that started out something like, "Tractor hard to start and won't pull a load. I've checked the gas flow, carb, and spark and they're all good. It can't be the compression because I just rebuilt this engine..."
