Was wondering if anyone has available the fast hitch pilot guide p/n 367 201 R11. It mounted on the side of the tractor and had two slots for the cylinder and draft cables. Looked similar to a thermometer. It was used on the 230-450 Farmalls and 350U in the late 1950s and indicated plowing depth.

Nifty or Hugh, do you know were the cables hook on the hitch or cylinder at? I have the pilot guide, but not the cables or the knowledge of how they mount.

George,
For the draft cable: at the bottom of the hitch bell crank there's moveable plate with a hole at the end. This is where you attach the cable end to.

For the cylinder cable I hope you have the original cylinder because the end attaches to a stud that screws into the cylinder. The other end attaches to the extension on the cylinder pin. The cylinder stop rod is located on the opposite side.

Do you have a pilot guide for sale or know where one is?

The only one I have was original to my 350 diesel. I bought it from original owner who I knew. So unless it is worth a lot I guess I will keep it. Thanks for the info. I do have the original cylinder on it. I also was skeptical of how well they worked. My 450 has the mounting on the cylinder for this, but does not have the pilot guide, I assume someone threw it away.

Nifty: Are you wanting this for show and restoration or rather just a practical way of monitoring your plow depth. If you wan show version, I expect it will be hard to find. If the latter, it's an easy thing to fabricate. Just buy a heavy duty cable control, anchor casing to tractor housing and end of inside cable to hitch links, run the cable up to your light bar and design an indicator.

I was wanting show quality. As you know the device did not work well and many of them were taken and trashed.

Nifty: No, I didn't realize that gauge didn't work well. I know the whole hitch was not much to write home about, I had one on a 560. I also had a 300 and in my opinion IH threw away the best part of the fast hitch when they did away with separate hydraulic cylinder and control valve to control depth while plowing. They should have kept the depth control cylinder and incorperated automatoc draft control into that.

Most folks don't realize this but IH had the very best mounted plowing machine built prior to 1963 in the fast hitch plow on Super C and 200. Not only did it have hydraulically controlled depth change on the go but it also hydraulically controlled side tilt with could be changed on the go by hydraulics.

I had on my farm, at least one new tractor from every series, letter series through to 66 series. My 30-50 series was and still is a Farmall 130. Hydrauilc depth change for plowing on the go, all the way from 9" deep to out of the ground. 49 years and trouble free all those years. I know of 200s, 300s and 400s with same trouble free hitch reputation as it applies to plowing. Most of those 30-50 and 40-60 automatic draft controlled hitches were major trouble before they were 10 years old. In fact I cut my 560 fast hitch up for scrap before the tractor was 10 years old.

Hugh, I think you are right. Seems like the older hitch does work and hold up better than the traction control hitch. There is nothing that works any better than a C/200 even with the bolt on plow.
