i found a farmall m that the has a 9 speed rear end but the rearend is shot is there any way to put a 400 or a 450 rear end in it to make a m-ta

Don't try that, just repair the M rearend and check out the 9 speed and the tranny bearings while you're into the rearend. The M fixed up with the 9 speed is very useable and/or saleable. If you want a 400 or whatever, just go buy one, this is the cheaper way out with a lot less grief.

NO ya dont have a 9 speed rear end you have an overdrive that works on all gears except 5TH.

Sounds like you already have your mind made up what you want to do...why are you asking?
It can be done, but I have heard you will have to go flywheel back. I am with the guy who says "Why would you want an M motor in a 400/450?"

Are you refering to a 9 speed transmission, these were very common on M's and some H's, MandW,Heisler and Behlen made the ones I know about with MW being the most popular. These replacement gears are all in the transmission with no changes in the rear end,Check on your tractor to see if has linkage going in the side of the trans or if it has a cable going in behind the starter

Anything is possible, if you have the time, money and desire.

But if I understand correctly what you want to do, you would have to replace everything from the flywheel (including the flywheel) back to make an M into a Super MTA.

Sounds like a lot of work just to essentially put an M engine on a 400.

IH did make a MTA and a SMTA. I don't know, but I would not think you could use the different rear end unless you modified the tractor quite a bit.

Ummm... If I understand you correctly, you think that there is such a thing as an M-TA and a Super M-TA. Sorry, but no M-TA was ever created. The models went in order from M to Super M to Super M-TA to 400. Also, the rear end isn't the main difference (although there were changes there too). The TA is located in the transmission and as such, had to be lengthened from previous M's. A Super M-TA is between 6 and 12 inches longer than a Super M. As such, you will require all different linkages, and new sheet metal.

Wardner is completely right. Look through the parts manual of a Super M and a Super M-TA and see how many parts interchange. It will be a very small number. The T/A unit required a complete redesign of the transmission casing to allow it to fit and operate. Also, the Super M-TA has IPTO, which required hollowing out the lower transmission shaft and running a "shaft within a shaft" to get live power to the PTO whenever the tractor was running. Park the two tractors next to each other and you will see that almost no part crosses between the two.

That is an erroneous assumption. A good look at parts book TC 46 (M thru SMTA) will set you straight.

To get back to your original question, yes, there are people who build fake SMTAs using 400-560 components. It can't be done with just a rear frame swap. The TA is in the center section and the whole assembly has to be changed out along with the rear frame and half of its internals.

I don't know why they do this. It would seem that anyone willing to pay a premium for a SMTA would know how to spot a fake.
