I have a 1960 IH560 which was driven into the machine shed 22 years ago and forgotten. I would like to see if I can get it running. Can anyone suggest a manual to give directions as to what steps should be taken to get it running. Also is there a IH tractor club in the Byron, Il. area that I could contact ? Many Thanks,

I've gotten quite a few old engines running that have been sitting. Remember they need three things Air, Spark, Fuel. I first disconnect the air filter. Then check the oil. It it looks very clean, don't let it fool you. The junk settles out over time and I have had to poke a hole through the carbon to get it to drain. Next pull the plugs, add a little squirt of oil. try to rotate it with the starter. Check and see if there is spark. I use a lawn mower gas tank and a rubber hose to the carb to eliminate old gas and junk in the tank and they usually run to some degree. I have been known to run them a short while with ATF for engine oil then drain them out and put fresh oil in, to clean them up.

what ever you do do not try to pull start the tractor with another one, you might break the crank or bend a rod, take it apart slowly, take your time and keep track of ur bolts and clean all of it good, if evrey thing looks good just put new gaskets and filters and change all the flueds and clean the tank out and fire it up!you mighyt be suprised what happens!!

They don't make manuals for that kind of stuff.

If you have cable, watch Spike TV on Saturday and Sunday mornings for old episodes of "TRUCKS." The host did an entire episode on getting an old engine running. It's really not that difficult.

1. Make sure the engine turns free by hand (or with a big bar/wrench), and look for any obvious fatal damage, like a cracked block.
2. Change the oil.
3. Clean out the gas tank.
4. Clean the carburetor.
5. Replace any frayed wiring, at the very minimum, the wire between the keyswitch and coil. 6. Clean up the cap, rotor, points, or replace.
7. Pull spark plugs and clean or replace.
8. Check the radiator and fill or change the coolant as necessary. Plain water is okay as long as you remember to drain it all out if the weather is going to get down to freezing. 9. Install a new/good battery.
10. Cross your fingers, turn the key, and push the starter button.

One addition, before turning the crank by hand, shoot a little oil into the spark plug holes.

On that old of an engine it might pay to drop the oil pan before changing the oil. Very easily have a massive amount of deposits in it.
