I have a 50 Farmall Cub. While York raking, 1st & reverse started making noise (chatter). I know my clutch is old (might be original in this tractor)...I tried adjusting @ the bottom of the clutch lever, when I adjusted all the way, I got a ratti-tat-tat niose when I restarted the motor, I backed off my adjustment & I can opperate the cub now, but, I have to idle way down to change gears (like not completely dissengaging?)...my question is this, could I just be in need of clutch replacement, or, did I likely do gear damage? As luck would have it, I just ordered the parts to do the clutch in my 65' Lo-Boy. I've done this before, but not in years, can anyone give me a time estimate to replace the clutch? Can an average mechanic do it in a day? Thanks from Maine.

Not only do you need a clutch and throw out bearing, but a new pressure plate, weak plate springs is the cause of the chatter you hear....normal on a old waren out clutch/pressure plate....there may be a brass bushing where the tranny shaft fits into the crankshaft, might check it while you are in there.....

...it's time to blow taps for your clutch.

Actually, the fact that it's not completely disengaging makes me think its probably the throwout bearing rather than the clutch itself. But you're going to replace them both at once.

It's hard to tell over the internet, but unless there's something your not telling us, I don't think it likely you have damaged the gearbox.

The clutch shaft is another matter; so replace the clutch and throwout bearing BEFORE you work this tractor again so you don't bugger the shaft. It's the very devil getting one out of a Cub in comparison to a letter-series.

When you split the tractor, examine the clutch shaft carefully. If you don't see any visible damage you should be ok.

Others on these boards have been able to Dremel off small burrs and nicks, but you have to put the tractor back together to find out if you have been successful.
